The attach rate. I believe right now the attach rate for that game is almost 50% (According to VGchartz sales numbers)

You cannot use a game released earlier in the life of a console to compare than when that console hasn't finished selling yet.

Well, we are talking about current-gen consoles. There isn't really anything else i can use, but i do see what you mean. If MK8 sells only 5m, and the suspected amount of Wii U consoles being sold at the end of its lifetime is 20m, then the attach rate is half of what i said.

Fanbase is far more important than install base. If Dragon Quest Heroes, Final Fantasy XV, and Kingdom Hearts 3 all do well, Square has good reason to believe their JRPG fanbase has a PS4. That's just the Square titles as there's going to be other series that appear that grow that specific userbase. I don't think using numbers now is a very fair comparison, because it's unlikely to have that great of an impact unless Nintendo/Sony are unable to convince Square that their respective platforms will suceed and continue to grow. |
Square already has proof that their jrpg fanbase has a Wii U, given logic and DQ X sales. Let's be honest, square's fanbase is always on nintendo and sony platforms.
The PS4 will win thanks to third party support and a longer life but it won't sell as much as the PS3
PS4 has been doubling(sometimes tripling) Wii U sales in Japan for sometime now. PS4 will outsell it quite easily despite the Wii U being on the market a year earlier.
Maybe I am too optimistic, but I am still hoping for a 8m sales for Wii U and 10m for PS4.
We should remember than in the last gen the total sales landed at ~25m (13m Wii, 10m PS3, 2m X360) in the end, and even though the market has shrunk I do believe that the PS4 could be able to match the PS3 at 8-10m, the Wii U will sell almost half of the Wii, perhaps 6-8m, but I hope more. And the X1, 0.5-1m at the very best I would think. And this would give us a total of 14.5-19m consoles.
Down 5-10m since last gen.
Something in me also says that the PS4 could even sell more than the PS3, but I am not willing to bet on it. The Japanese market will be really interesting to see how it ends up after this generation though.

There has not been a traditional JRPG on Wii U. There is no reason to believe there's a JRPG fanbase on Wii U (we'll see how well Xenoblade does) and there's not much to support the other notion.
FF XV, MGS V PP, persona 5, Yakuza Zero and lots of games will keep pushing PS4 sales in Japan.
