Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Former Sega CEO: Nintendo should keep making hardware and bring IPs to smartphones

US gaming publication Games Industry has published a rather interesting and lengthy interview with former Sega America CEO Tom Kalinske. The interview includes Tom talking about the video game industry in general and also the unfortunate decline of Sega. Kalinske also mentioned that he doesn’t believe Nintendo should give up on consoles or hardware, but he does concede that they should perhaps bring some of the iconic IP to iPhones or iPads. He believes they should do this to keep the brands relevant with younger and older consumers.

“I don’t think [Nintendo] should give up hardware or consoles,” Kalinske said. “I am surprised that they haven’t formed a division to extend the IP. I’d love to play some of their games on my iPhone or iPad. It’s really a form of marketing for them in a sense. They wouldn’t even need to make that much money off it, but it would keep their brands relevant with the users, including people that are older, like me. So it seems to me it’s a marketing mistake, but I don’t think they should give up what they’re doing because they’re damn good at it.”

The problem with nintendo isnt what they are doing... its everything they are not.

People may crucify me, but he has a point. Nintendo could use smart phones for marketing.

Huh, maybe hes former Ceo for a reason

Either ways, Nintendo should maybe bring some demos to smartphones to "advertise" like that SSB demo. Although, I have a feeling as soon as they do that, even if its a demo, every idiot will be like "Omg, Nintendo doomed, hurr durr, Demo on a smartphone = Nintendo going out of business cause I don't know anything" and we will never hear the end of it so maybe its best if they don't.

Doing both would be bad. The smartphone market is all about rock bottom pricing and the absolute most they could maybe get away with charging is $15, more likely $10. This would start eroding the value of the software, which Nintendo has fought hard to keep high. The erosion of value would do harm to their home console side and handheld side and those brands would begin to be perceived as not being worth the larger investment.

He left Sega of America in 1996 because he had a disagreement with Sega of Japan over the direction of the brand. He believed that Sega should have partnered with Sony, SOJ didn't.

Well that would have been an interesting sight to see

I do think some Nintendo IPs could go on iOS without killing them. NES/SNES games can go for $5 and under easily and make a ton of money from them. Beyond SNES could be a gray area, but theres no reason for them not to put at least NES games on the smartphone market

to be honest, i dont think Nintendo should be listening to anyone from SEGA

Going to the mobile doesn't always net in profit... take Capcom for example.
But yeah, Nintendo should continue to make consoles

He left Sega of America in 1996 because he had a disagreement with Sega's Japanese execs over the direction of the brand. He believed that Sega should have partnered with Sony, Sega Japan's execs didn't. He also disagreed with Sega Japan's decision to release Saturn early in the US when it had very few launch games ready and very few units manufactured. He was actually a pretty successful CEO, SOA's value increased from $72m to $1.5b during his years as CEO of SOA, and he was largely responsible for the success of Genesis in the US.

Plus he invented Flintstones vitamins, so you'd better recognize.
