Forums - Gaming Discussion - new gameseries in the 8th gen

I wanted to make a list of new gameseries in the gen and update as new stuff is incoming. To avoid too much discussion, some definitions. Gameseries - a series of games with at least two released games. New - it's a bit debatable, but at least new branding (mostly name) or new genre/gameplay. So I consider Super Mario and Mario as two different series, to bring a common example. I don't think 3D-Mario and 2D-Mario are different genres, but you can debate it if something comes up. The Tomb Raider reboot is a new series in my book, as it is a new gameplay, but we can discuss that too, if you think. The company it is listed under is the company that developed it or own the studio that developed it or own the IP.

I probably miss a lot, so I'm grateful for suggestions.

Some new stuff will probably develop into a new series, namely Watchdogs and Destiny, but just wait for the second game.

I look mostly at console, but will consider stuff that released first on PC/Mobile but came over to console, if it hasn't started too long ago.

Hörberg Productions:

Gunman Clive

Level 5:

Youkai Watch

Nintendo:

Pullblox/Pushmo

Dillon's Rolling Western

Denpa Men

NES Remix

Shin'en:

Nano Assault

Games that got a enhanced edition are also listed, as in some way they are a series already (and maybe getting more original entries later on).

Drinkbox Studios:

Guacamelee!

GungHo:

Ragnarok Odyssey

Marvelous/Sony:

Soul Sacrifice

Vblank Entertainment:

Also I include some entries there we already know that the second game (turning it into a series) is released soon.

GungHo:

Puzzle & Dragons (second game will release in april)

Sony:

Tearaway (second game is enhance version of first and will be released in the future)

Square Enix:

Bravely Default (second game will release in april)

What am I missing? Please post suggestions!

Tomb Raider reboot? You mean the PS3/360-game?

Yeah, no Tomb Raider.

Adding Youkai Watch.

tomb raider was launched gen 7.

puzzle and dragons, from what i see, doesn't have a sequel only spinoffs and ports which seem to fail your gameplay criteria.

I don't think the Tomb Raider reboot should be there. Even if it is a reboot it is far from new...
NES Remix shouldn't really be there either, again it isn't really new.

Both are games that play very differently to before. It is even more obvious for NES Remix. There is no single game-series it is a successor to. Or would you say that with NES Remix now Excitebike and Zelda are in the same game-series? Also NES Remix just don't simply remake the old games, the short challenges that only take a few seconds are let you make stuff that is different from playing the old games. i would pretty clearly say that are new games, did you try it already? Tomb Raider is more difficult, as it uses strongly the old branding. But still it is a new game. The old series was action-ortientied platforming-puzzle, from that only action is kept. There is a nod towards the platforming puzzles with the optional tombs, but I don't think you can say they are integral part of the game.

Yokai Watch should be there, that is 8th gen only and has 2 or 3 different entries now.

I knew I forgot something really important. That are already 3 games, With 1, 2 and 2.5. Also I think the later games have two editions like Pokemon.

I don't really see this list being very big if you only include things that have 2 or more games though, course it will get bigger in a few years but for now there isn't really much to add to it.

The point is to look at thenew series. We will mostly not remember the single games. For example we remember Smash Bros from N64 and Resident Evil from PS1, both turning into series. The single games are mostly forgotten.

Yeah, I kinda forgot that. PS4 wasn't around at the release, the platform it was brought to. Hmm, probably that isn't right.

You're right with Tomb Raider, completely forgot that.

Puzzle and Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition (what a unwieldy name) is still branded Puzzle an Dragons and uses the same gameplay I think. That makes for two similar games on console. Although the edition isn't released yet, it will come in April to japan if I read right. i agree that spinoffs like Battle Tournament probably isn't matching my criteria, but it isn't coming to console anyway.

Do new IPs in old IP's clothing count? Because if they do, Captain Toad is a new IP. Also, the Wonderful 101 is definitively new.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Neither of those are a game series.

Yes, they would both count if they were a series. But they are single games.
