Forums - Gaming Discussion - Theory on why Sony couldn't drop price on the PS4 last holiday

Of course they could have dropped the price. They had no reason to though. It would have been pointless since they were already selling almost all they could. It's also bad business to react to every single move your competitor makes, especially when they are reacting to you in the first place.

Very true but holiday is the biggest time for retail. Even if you are selling well you still have to compete with the cometition. Sony had their lead cut by 600k in the US. That's a big chunk when they could of extended the lead. We're talking about 1m+ in lost sales. That 1M  people buying software and PS Plus.

How about the fact of them not needing to? $50*3,000,000 = $150,000,000. They don't need to outsell the X1 3:1 to make a shit ton of money. They will be happy with 2:1 + lots o' profit lol.

Why is this a "theory"? I thought we already knew this.. It had nothing to do with money and all to do with stock. No point in dropping price to sell more if you're going to be unable to sell more due to not having stock.

I didn't see anybody mention this and I thought it for a while. Not much going on in the forums so decided to see what people thought about it.

I see people saying that they didn't need to. But they don't want to lose ground and momentum. They lost a lot of sales by not dropping the price. I'm sure we would of seen a holiday pricecut if they had more stock. Lets not forget the big deals the 360 had in the US every holiday even though it beat the PS3 week in week out. Why? because it pushed software and subs.

The PS4 does not need a price drop to dominate. ;)

They didn't price drop because it wasn't necessary.

I always maintained this. They were going to sell all they could produce anyway. Might aswell maximise profits. Would explain why the super popular the last of us and gta 5 bunduru was exclusive to just black Friday

Sorry I guess I discussed this in other forums and thought people here knew this too

Or.........they as a corporation need all the money they can get.

But more likely, Sony knew they could do nothing last holiday and still win. Dem Europeans and Japanese ;)

Conspiracy theories are fun, but the simple alternative always seems to excape us.

Not really a conspiracy theory to say a company had more than enough demand to exhaust supply.
