Its free upgrades DURING the first year. Not free for a year after you upgrade.

Microsoft can afford to give Windows 10 away for a year to all people with the their former models (starting at 7). They have a monopoly on the non Apple based PC market.
Here is common sense though:
Most people are going to upgrade through buying a new PC. PC's on average get replaced every three years and being that Microsoft has the monopoly thats just how it goes.

Dude...just buy a new PC. Problem solved. The Windows 10 upgrade only lasts a year. By that time, most of our PC's would need to be replaced anyway.

No, that won't happen. |
I wouldn't doubt it. I didnt upgrade to the new Microsoft word. I still use 2010 because the new Office is largely subscription based. I'm seriously thinking about switching to Apple since I do graphic design part time and Fonts, photography and graphic work is superior on that platform. That and the Apple hub is better.

Oem's would still be charged, and only 500 million dollars in revenue lost to make windows 10 the most used OS on the market. And it'll even out as more people will buy other Microsoft products since they saved the money on the upgrade.
I Don't care I WANT MY WINDOWS 9! I mean 10.
ANyone know what happens when I upgrade, do I loose my save pictures and everything?
huh.....strange that the picture in the OP doesn't have an xbox. but a kinect instead

that's actually a great point. i've never paid for a window's upgrade ever anyways so the free upgrade really isn't that big of a deal to their current finacials. hadn't thought about it like that.
They will have everyone using the same OS (good for developers) + they will still earn money for each pre-build computer that comes with windows on it and the people who buy the OS after the first year (it will only be free for the first year).
Very smart move :)
