Microsoft can afford to give Windows 10 away for a year to all people with the their former models (starting at 7). They have a monopoly on the non Apple based PC market.
Here is common sense though:
Most people are going to upgrade through buying a new PC. PC's on average get replaced every three years and being that Microsoft has the monopoly thats just how it goes.
