In all honesty, I definitely would. New consoles tend to have a slow start so being able to play older games (from a system you may have missed, even) is a major boon.

No I wouldn't. Ive never used the feature on all the consoles I've owned which have had it.

I'd easily pay $50 for PS3 backwards compatibility including media capabilities. $50 extra for PS2 and PS1 compatibility with higher native resolution and filter options.

I would have mainly because I gave my PS3 to my sis and havent been able to play a bunch of awesome PS3 games over the last year.
