Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sakurai on why Mewtwo isn’t paid DLC in Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS

Mewtwo is coming to Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS, but the character isn’t paid DLC. So long as players have both versions of the game, they can obtain Mewtwo at no extra cost.

Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai explained to IGN why the character doesn’t require an extra payment:

Sakurai also clarified the following before speaking on Mewtwo specifically:

That's not an explanation

what does that even mean

Important to note is the first sentence: "isn't paid content from the start. Possibly paid in the future?

The question is: will I be able to get mewtwo even if I just have one version of Smash?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I get the feeling something got lost in translation, but I think it means that people would simply look at the DLC as Nintendo being greedy or something.

My thoughts exactly.

What the hell is "a foothold in content distribution"

I get that but what does that mean for the people that don't buy both versions? Will Mewtwo just be a timed "exclusive" for people that own both versions or just an exclusive forever? I really wish they would just come out and say it cause I am sure a lot of people are going to bash it without knowing 100% of whats going to happen with Mewtwo

Probably not. They might even release more characters like this to sell both versions. I personally wouldn't mind, so long as they let you play against people online as Mewtwo who don't have the Mewtwo DLC.

But that would be unacceptable! You'd have to pay for a 3DS, a SSB3DS, a WiiU and a SSBWiiU just to get one character. That's a ton of money, even if they add 10 new characters. Releasing the fighters as individual DLC and allowing owners of both versions to get it all for freemakes more sense financially.

I don't agree, Mewtwo will be time exclusive for those who got both versions, maybe like 4 months and then it will be pay dlc for those who want him for 2.99 to 4.99.
