Forums - Gaming Discussion - *Both Gameplay & Story Games Are Great

Both Are Fun

So, I always see people take jabs at Nintendo for not having story in there games. People say that Nintendo only has Mario or Zelda. Well, this simply isn't true. Nintendo has a stable of IP's of high-quality. Also, just because the game lacks a strong story, doesn't make it bad. These games are often a blast to play

On the flip side, I've seen multiple Nintendo fans through the years say that cutscene-story driven games are boring & lack fun. That Sony hypes their games up with grapghics, only to have the gameplay suck. Well, that's also not true. Games such as The Last Of Us & Heavy Rain are actually really fun too. The story & cinematics help draw you in.

In Short, all types of games can be awesome & all types of games can suck. It depends if it's done correctly

Nintendo usually does both properly.

As do other developers

... isn't that obvious?

It should be but apparently not based off of the posts I've seen.

Some might be totally trolling but I'm not sure

Makes sense and I wish more games put more effort into the story and gameplay instead of just graphics

Gameplay and story should always be the top priority. Beautiful graphics are just the cherry on the cake to help you being drawn into the game even more.

I disagree to some extent. Games that only have a good story and lacking gameplaymight as well be movies or tv shows. Games with good gameplay and no story, well... they definitely still work as games, but no ideal.

People talk a lot about Nintendo's games not having good stories, but that's not true. The story is obviously second thought in games like Mario, but it is handled in a way that works and does the job without becoming annoying. Other games like Zelda, Pokémon and Star Fox have great stories that do a great job of making the player involved and invested in the characters - they're usually all fairly simple stories with little depth, but still pretty good.

I haven't played The Last of Us and as a total outsider to that game it almost feels like people are talking about a movie when I hear them talking about it - that happens because the story is the obvious focal point of the game, and its deep and complex I'm sure. However, I'm also sure the gameplay is good enough to keep everything going.

That's what I'm saying though. Certain Nintendo fans say that if the game appears to be story driven, the gameplay must suck. It might as well be a movie. That's simply not the case most of the time. Plus, not all non-Nintendo games are like that. Many Sony / 3rd party IP's are gameplay focused as well.

Multiple Nintendo IP's appear to lack a story which is also untrue. It isn't the focus but it's still there, just in a different way.

I was hesitant about TLOU too but it has tons of great gameplay to go along with the story. It took me like 20Hrs to beat it & maybe 3Hrs were cut-scenes. It sounded like a lot to me too but it's spread out throughout the game nicely

Yes true. Ubisoft and Nintendo.

The game is bad until it gets released on the Wii U right Spurge

lol. Not at all, but they just make a lot of quality games compared to others. EA does as well, but many are sports games without stories. Still good, but not what your looking for here.

I agree with that. Some of the IP's that Nintendo has are of the highest quality. With that said, games from other developers can be just as good if not better. This is all personal taste of course. I was just saying that the stigmas certain developers have are simply not true.
