For once I agree with you.

I can see them doing it, and I can see it shitting all over something that seems good enough to stand on it's own two feet.

More likely than player characters though, I can see them throwing in iconic Mario maps.

The rabbit hole is getting pretty deep. Would this really be a problem? What if one of the maps was just... shaped like a Goomba, or something? Does that really ruin the whole game -- or rather, does that make it not a new IP?

Pushmo has a ton of puzzles shaped like old-school Nintendo sprites. Is it not truly a new IP because of that?

I doubt it, Mario isn't a squid.

Not yet he aint =P
Im sure they can make him a Blooper when he transforms and use FLUDD, the game was made for this.

Nintendo has a really weird thought process. Miyamoto himself said this in an interview with EDGE:

"There were heated debates over who the main player character should be. Whether it should be Mario, or a squid."

First of all, the debate was between Mario OR a squid. The designers understood that to make Mario the player character would rule out squids. There is no mention of making Mario a squid for the purposes of this game. Then --

"But at the same time, we had some worries. If it were Mario, we wouldn't be able to create any new IP."

Here Miyamoto says one of the reasons they axed the Mario idea was to make the game a new IP purely for the sake of making a new IP. That doesn't sound like the sort of logic that would result in him saying never mind slap Mario on it anyway. That would be a complete reversal of position.

Yeah Ive read all of this before, I like that they decided to go with a new IP. But the idea of Mario DLC being game ruining is just laughable to me.

Weather they add it or not, this complaint just makes me lol.

Sorry, I didnt realise Mario Kart 8 was a Zelda game or that Fatal Frame V is the latest game in the Dead or Alive franchise =P

Nobody thinks this way, it makes no sense. If Mario was featured in the game from day 1, on the cover of the game and advertised as being in it then sure I would get the complaint. But if he is just DLC awhile on nobody (that isnt trolling) is going to question the success or failure of it because of Mario DLC. Its achievements are its alone, not the Mario IP's

One of Nintendo's biggest image problems is that "they just rehash the same characters/IPs".

Splatoon shows this isn't the case, but putting a Mario skin in it would make it just be seen as more proof of the above statement.

It's a public image thing.

I totally disagree how Mario can destroy the game but I agree that it would be nice for it to be a new IP! Such a fresh idea, I love it!

My view: AMIIBO feature :)

Can I ask for clarification here? You're saying replacing the Inklings with Mario skins would ruin the game. Can Mario show his face at all? What if there's a little mini-game where he cleans up the mess with the FLUDD -- as long as you can't play as Mario in regular matches, this doesn't interfere with the game experience, right?

Bloopers have already been spotted in the game, and that doesn't seem to have ruined anything... we are walking a fine line here.

But why would it be bad for them to just leave the IP alone? does it really NEED mario or mario related stuff throwing in?, personally, I think it's good enough to do perfectly fine without it, I feel like it would be cheap for them to include it.

I fail to see how skins will ruin a game

It wouldn't be bad, but Nintendo has a massive history to draw from and they love to go right for the nostalgia jugular. Again, the Pushmo example. They've been mixing their IP together in really small ways for almost as long as they've had multiple IP to work with. Metroids in Kid Icarus, Kirby in Link's Awakening. The cast of F-Zero is a hodgepodge of Nintendo references. Does F-Zero X feel cheap when you boot it up and you see James McCloud and Mr. EAD?

This is something Nintendo has done for a long time. It's inevitable, they love to tie their franchises together with little nods here and there. It doesn't mean they'll replace all of the characters with Mario.

Yes, this is Nintendo we are talking about. They refrence their other IPs in like every game they make.
stuff like that Blooper is common for a Nintendo game, they have always done it. From Chain Chomps and Kirby in Links Awakening to Olimars Ship in Galaxy etc. Its just what they do.

Hang on, I can do even better.
