They better have. It's also not just naming though; it's how you brand your system and advertise it as well. The Wii U was advertised with Wii Remotes in its initial commericals and they only showed the GamePad at E3, which caused most of the confusion we see today. The name itself isn't the problem all on its own, it's how it was marketed.

it was never name confuse thing
console was so unattactive nobody even bothered to market or wom or care that was reason people confused.
apple release something called new ipad no body confuse ? microsoft release xbox one but no body confuse either

microsoft release something called windows 10 before 9 and nobody confuse either.
if console was good nobody would confuse
wii u was always doomed at start. releasing before real next gen and launch games were nothing but ports of ps3 titles was piece of crap.
if you release a console in 2012 that has same spec 2005 consoles then not even your mario would save oyu
