Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

whatever said:
This can't be about helping the XBone. They could have cut the price by $100 and it wouldn't have cost them 2.5 billion until they sold 25 million more consoles.

I can't help but think this purchase is for reasons also outside of Xbox.

Again I don't mind the move, but something tells me MS keeps this on all platforms possible now I think about it more and more.  I mean if they remove it from Sony Platforms 90+ million (theoretical) install base what would stop them from removing it from Android and iOS? They cannot think for one second that Minecraft would be a deciding factor in people switching mobile platforms... MS seems to be more attracked and focused on Mobile then the console bussiness and I don't think they would say "fuck you" to hundreds of millions of current and potential users. They want to make money, making this exclusive after the money they just spent is not away to recoupe the investment and make money. I am sure people will say MS does not care about the money they have lots of it, but really the people that say that have no clue... MS has shareholders to keep happy, they always want more money and it's simply not good bussiness to toss money away (duH!)

Would I could see though is maybe MS platforms get updates first, new content first or even maybe exclusive content to gradually get more people to buy into there platforms while still making money on gamers that refuse to switch.

Feels like a gigantic waste of money but as others have said it does feel like more of an MS move, rather than a move for the games division. MC itself won't do much for the Xbox, so it wouldn't make sense that they're buying it solely to make it exclusive. They'll keep in on mobile/PC, and Xbox and in that case I could see it working out (still won't help X1 though). A potential MC2 won't do nearly as well as the phenomenon that was MC. It's the same "trying to capture lightning in a bottle" situation that stuff like the Wii U, and Kinect 2.0 have suffered from.

2.5B$ down the drain for MS
Sure the game sells but they won't even make profit off of that in 10 years

Why the fuck would you want to start a new company when you have an already successful one?

What would stop him though? I mean your Your "Notch is the one that gets the $2.5 billion, and he won't be using it to make games, because he no longer owns a game company." makes no sense. So because someone starts a company and sells it he is somehow not allowed to make games anymore? I am confused, because people selling successful companies and starting new companies happens to be a pretty common thing not only in the Video game market but many others also.

Maybe the pressure was getting to be to much? I mean he created one of the most successful gaming IP's in history! Whatever he created would be compared to the success of Minecraft. Still I am sure it would happen with another company but at least there is a disconnect between Mojang and any possible future company, the general public really won't put it together. This allows him to dump not all the pressure I am sure but the vast majority of it... Minecraft will not be directly hanging over any future projects as that's not his anymore to deal with. Maybe he can focus his passion on smaller projects? He has the money to do it. What some people don't get is maybe he just had enough, people say stuff all the time and act do what they said they were against! Maybe he had enough, wanted to focus on different projects and the money dangled in front of him was to much to turn down. People calling him a sell out need to calm down and not take things so personal.

I bet it's different when there is a $1.75b check on the table with your name on it.

I bet it's not. Not if you have standards. Which Notch supposedly did.

The game is totally different when you have billion rather than millions. He could even make his own GTA and it wouldnt even make a dent in his cash, which it would in the normal circumstances.

I would take the cash and make a super team, but I dont get that impression from Notch, he seems like a small indie game based kind of guy.... but still who would turn down that kind of money.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

I think they will keep it on Playstation platforms.

It makes sense because it is selling verry well there, and also, it could help them sell more X1s if they announce Minecraft 2 as an X1 exclusive because then all the Playstation people playing Minecraft will be like "Oh crap, we gotta get an Xbox now to play Minecraft 2!"

Still not sure about this deal though....

If they can keep all the creative tallent there and happy, then I think this will be a good thing for them, I just hope Mojang doesn't fall apart like Rare did.

Also on a sidenote, if they are willing to go out and buy Mojang for 2.5B, then why the heck haven't they gotten Playground Games (Forza Horizon Dev.) yet??

They would be an excellent addition the the Xbox family, and seem to already have a good relationship with MS.

They already own the IP I believe.

But this is more about mobile then console IMO. MS seems to be loosing interest and are more concered with the mobile marketplace as they have proven time and time again they will not give up on it! This is going all the way back to when Palm was king and they tried pushing Windows CE... They want this.

Yup, that kind of makes more sense. And honestly, Windows Phone is not bad at all. I really like the OS, the only issue I had (and the reason I ended up returning my Nokia) was lack of applications. Other than that, the phones are really awesome.

I wonder if there's a chrome app for windows  yet.

I am a Blackberry guy myself (10.2.3 brings the Amazon marketplace and all the popular apps! goodbye app gap :-p) but I always wanted to get a Windows 8 phone, I like the build quality of the Nokia phones, design and the UI. Even the cheaper phones seem to run smoothly.  The shitty thing is my carrier (Bell) does not carry the Lumia line they just have that Samsung Ativ and that's it! Rogers has some however they are more of a urban carrier and not great in my area.  I would sooner get kicked in the balls then own a iOS device and just not all that keen on Android.  I want MS to gain more traction so Carriers will look at them more and offer us more options! I could totally see myself using a BB10 and Windows device! I also herd that MS is planning the same thing that BB10 offers and that is Android support and that should help with the apps.

Not sure on the Chrome app, but I think MS really wants to push IE so I really doubt it. Same thing with BB10 I can download and install the chrome apk and it works great but when Blackberry has the best mobile browser in the business it's hard to try anything else :-p

How is IE mobile though? I have limited experience with it but from what I did use of it it seemed pretty good. Chrome constantly crashes and is slow on my Samsung Tab... drives me crazy.
