I guess it won't be as bad in white, right. |
the glossy part is easily removeable, maybe some third parties will offer matte exchange parts

I just wonder why they put it in? Really, are there people who like glossy designs? I can't think of any advantage on a glossy design. If you have to take care for dust yourself you get immediately angry about glossy designs.

*shrug* I think it looks good and I have no problem spending 30secs to clean my TV rack with a microfiber cloth once a day .. cleaning the bookshelves is much more of a hassle

Let me answer for you, as a product designer.
Without vents above it, hot air cannot escape but adding vents would compromise the overall design.
So the next best thing is to use smooth surfaces to transmit heat faster, at the same time air current flowing over the surface has less drag, thus moves heat more efficiently. the heat on the other side of the machine cannot return down and soak the board because it will be pushed out by the fan, the heat in the hdd bay has no fan assisted exhaust, so is subject to moderate heat soak, any increased efficiency in moving said heat is worthwhile.

So you say Sony uses glossy finishes (let's take Lafiel's 16%) for solving heat issues?

Not to 'solve heat issues', but to aid heat dissapation - the only glossy external surface is the hdd bay cover.
That isn't to say it would break if it were also matte, but the overall temperatures would be higher, which can reduce the lifespan of mechanical hdd's, and hey, if you can reduce the chances of a problem from happening with such a minor change, why not?
Get someone to take their cover off and take a picture for you, or pull off the cover of a friends, you'll see vertical lines passing down the inner side surface, that's because in the plastic itself, there are small hollow channels intended to aid the even dissapation of heat.
Eh. I dont know. The console looks better but the controller looks off.

This is totally new to me and interesting. Can you give actual numbers by how much a glossy design helps instead of a matte finish? That said I think that glossy is also a design decision of "look" and not aid heat dissipation. It may be a side effect but it is also taken as a "premium" look, for sure.
This guy modded an original Xbox almost 10 years ago:

This is what I hope the Xbox One Slim looks like when it comes out in a few years! Something close to this.
It looks like a lunchbox to me. Not sure it qualifies as fantastic... I think the current model looks better, even if it looks like a VHS VCR. At least i'm not thinking of opening it up and grabbing some grub.
I'm joking btw, in case someone takes it seriously...
