so looking at 0.012% of the install base defines what they all did in the past.... nice logic there

...........

yeah, I know how stats work but still, with such a small number of people. not even .1%, you can hardly call that considering how there could be a multitute of variables. For example would be age, yes they say they did 7 yr olds but how many? Location, was it uniform all accross the country or was it in pockets. I know with a lot of scientific experiements, if your trials and treatments are not all mixed together with the same environment, usually your data is not very valid especially if there are not multiple replicates.

Since the survey has been made by the most respected research company in the US, I'd say your fears are unfounded.

I'm sure that they did a good job of reducing their margin of error, as their income and their image depend on it.

As the sampling methodology was never mentioned in the article (at least, I don't see where they did), we cannot know for sure how they did their screening or even if they just did basic random sampling. Suffice it to say, tho, Nielsen is a repuabtle stat research company and I am inclined to believe that there is credibility in their research methodology.

Not really surprising. 360 folkes jumping on the PS4 is not a big surprise because there isn't much allegiance between general PS3/360 owners, they'll jump ship if the other guy is offering a better package.

With Nintendo ... yeah I can see that too. If a kid was lets say 10 years old in 2006 or 2007 when he got his Wii, he would be 17/18 today ... and odds are a lot of those kids by this age are more attracted to a PS4 than a Wii U.

This has been evident the entire gen. But I don't think 1200 people is a statistically significant survey. But Given that the ps4 has consistently outsold the ps4 in the US every month, it's no surprise.

2.83% margin of error assuming reliable sampling methods (@10mil total population size). It's actually within acceptable levels.

Don't even bother.... There are always people who belittle statistics because it doesn't fit their perception of reality...

I own a ps4. I don't own an xbox one. I think the ps4 is the better system, and I hope and think it will win this gen. I just don't trust a survery of 1200 out of 10 million people. Especially an online poll that's super easy to fabricate. Trust me, I would say the exact same thing if the study was the other way around. Sorry I try to be objective and a skeptic.

But this was not an online poll. Where did you get that information? It is research that a well respected company conducted, and I seriously doubt they would endanger their billion dollar company's reputation by fabricating one marginal survey.

But whatever, you can be sceptical as much as you want, the research is as valid as it gets.

may be?

I guess I assumed based on the wording of the article.

...and Xbox gamers told me they disagreed hen I showed them the numbers making predictions that the old multiplat audience who owned PS2's and switched to the 360 and reverted back to the Playstation would happen again.

Sucks to be right sometimes.  I guess its trolling when its common sense and everyone knows the majority of gamers follow multiplats and the most popular console of the day in their region.

The torch was passed with most usage from PS1> PS2> 360> PS4.

I don't really buy this idea that PS2 gamers are "coming home." Why? Because as of this fall, the PS2 will be 14 years old. Those teenagers are now over 30. Those 20 somethings are now pushing 40 and those 30 somethings are now pushing 50. There is no way most of those gamers (most of which were mainstream consumers) are still hanging around, glued to the industry etc.

I'm sure a small percent are still around, but come on.
