Forums - Sony Discussion - Advice wanted: If I get Playstation Now, is PS3 still worth it?

PS NOW is years away from replacing a console like the PS3 completely, so no just get the console.

Since psnow price (for now) is on a per game basis I would say yes. Buy a PS3, get the titles you want, and couple that with PS+ (which you need for your PS4 anyway) you should be all set.

If you don't mind lag, buffering during multy and single player games and you have a t1 internet yes sure the ps3 isn't worth it.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Honestly, I think ps3 is a far better choice... Like, lets say that they fix the pricing issue, the next issue will depend on ur internet speed, whether or not u are using wifi or ethernet and your isp... Now, if you look at the 1000s of articles out there about Netflix vs isps... It will pretty much give u the result where isps don't like streaming unless you are paying a shit load of money for ur internet otherwize your streaming quality will be 480p or lower on netflix. Now, this doesn't happen everywhere but the fact that this is becoming a large issue is a problem for services like PSnow that rely on data transfer...

Like, its not about whether or not you have a 5mbps or 25 mbps, its about how much data you are transfering that the isps hate and if the isps throttle which most of them are doing, specially in the states or if your isp has a datacap (like in Canada), well, you will get a subpar experience which is worse when it comes to gaming than netflix cause gaming requires interaction. So imo, its not going to even be close to the same experience as a ps3 cause on a ps3, you will get consistent experience throughout the game vs psnow, your experience will vary depending on a ton of factors that include many that are out of both Sony's and the consumer's hands

And on top of that, we dont know how many of the games are even going to be avaliable for streaming.

But we will see

@bold: Sony claims hundreds, plural, of PS3 games, so that would mean at least 200+ games to start with. Not too worried about there not being enough games, just whether or not specific games I'd be into will be part of it.

You make a lot of good points here though. I'd never thought about this before, but isp throttling could be an issue, and with the recent fall of net neutrality, that will only get worse. Though at the same time, with net neutrality down, isps might also allow Sony to just pay a fee to get them to throttle it back up so their users will have a good experience.

No, just get one of them. If I were you, I'd pick the PS3.

There's only one question:
Do you have the budget and the space to have both a PS3 and a PS4?

If Yes, then go for a PS3 because PSNow will probably take some times to take off, offers and prices don't seem to be good, and we don't know how many games will be available.

If not, then you can for a PS4 but you won't have many game, and you should expect to be able to play PS3 until a year or two, IF the service does work.

Space isn't an issue, at all. I have a massive wall unit that houses all my systems with room to spare. It's glorious. Budget is the issue. At this point, people are saying PS Now isn't worth it and won't be for some time, and since at this point PS4 still isn't quite worth it to me and probably won't be until next year some time, now is probably the time for a PS3. I can manage that much budget wise.

The PS3 is really cheap today, you just would have to pay like 100 $ extra compared to just a DS3 controller. It's the only way to always get access to all the games you want to have. With PS Now, you're limited to what's available and that will never be the complete library. Some games may even get removed after some time. With a PS3 you also get better image quality, much less lag and you're able to play offline.

I think PS Now really is only interesting for people who aren't into gaming that much. They can try out some games and if they like it, they can buy a console to enjoy gaming as much as possible. But a service like that will never be able to replace a classic gaming system, there are just too many disadvantages imo.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

I've played on gaikai.com 2 years ago and it was mind blowing. Crysis 2 felt like playing on my PC. The Wicther 2 same story. NFS (not sure witch one) - latency made this type of game unplayable.

NOTE: I live on suburbs of Warszawa (capital of Poland) maps.google.com

So don't wory about your ISP.

PS: You should buy PS3.

PS Now is expensive, and only has a small selection of games.

It might get better, but for now an actual PS3 >>>> PS Now.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

PS4 and PS Now is a way better deal than buying a PS3 if you have good internet. I would save the $200 - 250 it would cost to get a three and use it to play the games on PS Now. I would love to go into more detail, but the beta is still under NDA, so I won't be able to say anything until that is lifted.

For the moment waiting is probably the best option. If you have not had a PS3 all this time a couple more days/weeks won't hurt. The beta will open to everyone in the US this thursday according to Sony's E3 announcement. You will have a lot better idea of how well PS Now works, and what kind of offerings they have very soon.
