Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Does MS have an IP that on level with Gears or Halo that we don't know about?

Hmm...
What exactly are we expected to say if we don't know about it?

You know why?

you are not stupid...

You know what?

I'm stupid for argumenting my case, when you don't know much about Xbox.

Sorry about that.

my MS gametag: SUREST GAMER.

have had my account since 2009.

you can always look it up....

not everyone who owns a console has to be a fanboy...imagine a world like that? :)

I am going to ignore that example...but still Gran Tourismo sold almost as much as the best selling Halo game. Also I dont know about Nintendo but Sony does take plenty of risks with thier IPs. evident in TLOU and critically acclaimed games like Heavy Rain and LittlebigPlanet. Really wished MS didnt play safe everytime.

Once again, you're missing the point. MS has created new IPs and some have been very successful. The OP ignores that because none were as big as Halo or Gears.

Whether or not Gran Turismo sold as much as Halo is irrelevant. If the OP is gonna mention MS hasn't made anything bigger than Halo or Gears, perhaps its worth noting Sony hasn't created a new IP bigger than GT.

Little Big Planet isn't a great example of taking a risk. That's an IP Sony has gone to many times now

Heavy Rain was a risk.

TLOU is a zombie survival game with shooting, I don't consider that a big risk. Making sequels will not be a risk either.

MS will only revive what they feel is a financially viable option. They have Rares fleet, but only believe in a handful of them. Thats pretty easy to see now. They wont even let Rare develop Killer Instinct and Conker is being used in Project Spark.

Well... yeah. Sony flatout said they're going to make less games because many were financial failures.

Ken Lobb worked on the Killer Instinct. That's just as good as having Rare working on it.

No...Sony never said that. The entire industry is cutting back on making AAA's. Sony will still have a ton of AAA's but not as much as the fleet they came out with last gen. Even half of what Sony made last gen is still more than most.

Okay..what other Xbox IP has sold has much as Halo?

Kinect Adventures. :-p

The OP is being critical at MS for not creating IPs bigger than Halo or Gears. But Sony and Nintendo's biggest IPs are old as well. Are they not investing in their future?

MS never created those games. They financially aided in their success, but didn't create them. They were already in process without MS. MS bought Gears because they are financially dependent upon that those two games. Having a one-two punch with Halo and gears one year after the other worked wonders for MS during the 360 generation. They never had that during the original Xbox gen. It was Halo and essentially nothing else unless you were super hardcore and wanted to play Kotor and Ninja Gaiden. Of course I bought those games on the original Xbox but if you asked the common guy they wouldn't know what KOTOR was. Its because of MS why I am a Bioware fan today. Hell, its because of MS why I am a Halo or a Gears fan respective in loving Epic or Bungie. I want to be an MS fan...with a game they made or at least was founded under their ownership.

I figured it out. Its Quantum Break. Everything is pretty much hanging on that game.

What IP have they created that they haven't bought off a devloper? Halo from Bungie, Gears from Epic Games and Fable from Lionhead?

Why does that matter though? As long as they have the games that should be enough.

Still don't get it? It means I am gauging the ability of Microsoft to create hits for themselves without scouting outsiders games they've already made. Almost every major hit MS had has come from some outside company and it was already in development. Halo, Gears, Kinect. Those are the three biggest finds in the career of MS in the industry outside of Xbox Live and they were all found by MS. Well...ok..Sony turned down the Kinect and then MS got it, but you get the picture. Lionhead met the end of its greatest days under the ownership of MS. Rares franchises did as well, except for KI. I am loving KI, but I still feel sorry for Rare that MS wont even allow them to work on it, but rather just check up on how other studios develop their baby and just look and just act as a figurehead no different than a ceo that was kicked out of the company he created by the board of directors.

Most of MS games come from random people or known people and its always a toss up how those games turn out. Development is always a toss up but its better if from the company if they build a worthy group themselves and create quality from within. Good thing for MS they understand the importance of third party or else they would end up like they did in the first gen.

It is an interesting question, especially considering the Xbox 360 went through a period, beginning around the time of the release of the original Kinect onwards, where they weren't really putting out much in the way of new IPs or frankly even terribly varied ones. With the exception of a few exclusives that were ported in from PC, the majority of the 360's non-Kinect-required exclusives revolved around Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable, for a good few years. It may have been because they had all but guaranteed that the 360 had US sales dominance, and had no aspirations to try and secure a lead in the other territories, so they stopped experimenting with new properties and just stuck to the most profitable IPs they had. (except for, again, the original Kinect, cause Jebas there was a lotta stuff coming out for that.)

Either way, it's probably what has contributed to the concern some might have as to the variety of Microsoft's exclusive offerings going forward. But to answer this question, if I had to pick a property that might become another heavy hitter, I'd have to guess Crackdown. I very much enjoyed the first one, and it has that kind of mindless fun element that could make it extremely popular, if enough effort and resources are placed into its development.

I liked reading your post. Crackdown was good, but its no MS helm game. Its a great game to fill the ranks though and I think its going to fill the same open world mindless killing void as Dead Rising and Sunset Overdrive. Sunset Overdrive is being sold as this big thing, but really it isn't unless they show something truly different. So far its basically Jet set radio having a baby with infamous and Dead Rising. Same open world creative slaughter concept. Hopefully it doesn't get old quickly, but MS is putting too much stock in this game just because it came from a former Sony partner.
