Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Does artstyle really affect Zelda sales?

Comments on RolStoppable analysis:
As a consumer the things you could use to guide you in your purchase is:
- Reviews (all Zelda games are about the same Metascore)
- Word-of-mouth reviews.
- Artstyle of press material.

"Removed the overworld basically altogether. Messed up the sword and shield combat by giving the player shields that break quickly. What could have been dynamic battles where you switch between blocking attacks, shield-stunning enemies and attacking, was turned into puzzle-like fights that required you to swing in the right direction. Questionable looks, obnoxious screentext speeds (plus a handholding sidekick), no overworld and poor execution of combat killed this game's sales."
These objections, even if true, was probably not what kept consumers away.

This game looks fantastic. I like these type of art style. I really want to play wii u zelda. Really badly. But I dont want to get a system just for a game.

Yes, artstyle does affect sales, but it's not the only thing to consider.

4) Twilight Princess: Summed up as short as possible, it's a tribute to OoT that polished up the game mechanics. Sold accordingly.

You don't think it being a cross-gen title, launch title, long awaited, on the rebound from people boycotting wind waker / game cube altogether, did not significantly boost its sales? I was suckered into buying it day one, thought it was merely ok, not as good as wind waker or oot, did not finish it.

Sure, all those things you mentioned, except long awaited (because years between Zelda games have become the norm), may have boosted sales. Saying "a tribute to OoT" implies that Nintendo got a lot more right than just the artstyle though.

True

OOT 1998
Majora's mask 2000
Wind waker 2003
Twilight princess 2006
Skyward sword 2011

Skyward sword should have the long awaited boost. TP was long awaited for those that ignored wind waker.
Why did it take so long to make skyward sword, the game is not that big, re-used areas, empty overworld. It won't surprise me when Zelda WiiU gets pushed to holiday 2016.

People are stupid, so yes!

Twilight Princess did that well mostly because it was a Wii launch title. The darker art-style didn't really matter too much!

The Twilight Hack also sold a few TP copies.
