Xbox’s Yusuf Mehdi, the brand’s Chief of Marketing and Strategy, said recently that he still believes Microsoft’s original policies with the Xbox One were the best thing for them.
Mehdi says:
I think it was the right vision. I think a digital future for games is the way to go. I think where we missed was that we didn’t give customers the choice if they wanted to sell or pass on their disc. If we had more dialogue with our fans, we would have heard more loud and clear that this was important and we would have delivered that future. If we had done that maybe we would have gotten to a better place. Who knows, maybe fans would have said no, let’s skip the disc and give me those features.
I’d have to disagree with Mehdi. I do think digital gaming is taking a lot of the market from physical game discs and stores but not to the degree where something like MS’s original Xbox One vision would be acceptable.
Personally I don’t think Mehdi will see that future for a long time, not even in the Xbox One’s successor. I believe there will always be a niche demand for physical game discs, game sharing, used games, etc. Even if the all digital, no used games market gains steam in the next generation.
