Are you saying that just because of what an original game was like determines how good the next game was. Was GTA 2 an incredible game, I doubt it, then GTA III came along and changed the face of gaming. If you;ve played Killzone Liberation you will know that it is an extremely good game, and I think that Guerilla will build form there. If you are also counting games released earlier in the year, you also have Lair, which will be a great game as well, which's developer's last game was though to be very good (i think).

You may say ignore FF XIII because it's probably not coming out this year, but many people will think that they might just wait to get that, rather than buying Blue Dragon and/or Lost Odessey.

I'm saying that I'll hedge my bets on a successful developer in a genre (say, Bioware in RPG) over a mediocre developer in another genre (Say, Guerilla in FPS). Besides, Killzone is going to be head-to-head with Halo. Do you honestly think that Killzone is going to get more than 15 seconds of press from anyone? Not to say that it will be a horrible game, it's just likely that no one will care.

Yes, people might wait for FF on the PS3. But that wasn't the argument, was it? We were arguing the merits of the upcoming games (pre-holiday 2007) for each system.

Lair does need to be included. While I think the game will be mildly successful, I don't think it will rock anyone's world. I'd put it a little higher than Eternal Sonata and a little lower than Mass Effect or Bioshock (who, if you remember, cleaned up E3 in Best of Show awards).

I rekon Sony is clever enough to avoid a head to head fight with Halo 3, the PS3 games will come at the start of the holiday season (September) and should carry it though past christmas into the new year

I also though the arguement was whether or not Halo 3 has 4M pre-orders, but people go off topic

I kinda doubt the 4 million pre-orders, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the vicinity of 3 million. Remember Sony having a press release saying God of War 2 had over 1 million plus pre-orders? According to NPD in March, that game sold less than 900,000 copies. But, without a doubt, Halo 3 will be huge. It's the most anticipated title this year, I think.

I wonder if their idea of "preorders" is companies like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. having already placed their initial orders for the game.

I don't know a single person who has preordered Halo but know about 15 who will buy it on launch day.

That's a good point, actually. I'm certain the stores combined order over 1 million copies of God of War 2. So, it is feasible to believe the stores are ordering Halo 3 in massive numbers.

The difference here is that this game is not coming out for around another 6 months, whereas the millionth pre-order for GoW 2 came a couple of weeks before launch. Although now GoW 2  has actually sold 1M in NA

add me

I think it's interesting to note that GoW2 had a lot of pre-orders but failed to outperform Pokemon which had half as many pre-orders. So there definitely seems to be some discrepancy as to what accounts for pre-orders. The only thing I can conclude is that Nintendo is pretty honest about how it reports it's pre-orders.

Halo 3 is coming out in September, not to mention Bioshock in August. MS has a pretty solid release schedule from here to the end of the year, whereas Sony has a bunch of maybe 2007. Liar was supposed to be out this month, but now it's been delayed to sometime later, Heavenly Sword was rumored for the spring but (maybe?) June/July.

Almost nothing is known of Killzone 2 outside of prerenderd video, so saying it's certain for this year is, at the very least, a little brazen. If this is Sony's Halo killer than why not try to get some press out now before the halo 3 beta and launch buildup shitstorm? MGS4 is not happening this year, and I highly doubt FF as well.

Warhawk is not going to do massive numbers IMHO. I bet it's going to be a very decisive game, that is some people will love it but others wont be able to stand it, thus leading to mixed opinions/reviews and mediocre sales - but again this is MHO.

Drake, who knows.... Almost nothing is known about this game but atleast the devs are doing a new ip.

On the inverse, I bet Bioshock will be a great game but do shitty sales. Shadowrun will find a cult following but few sales, Forza 2 will be slightly disappointing at launch but sales will pickup around the holiday. Mass Effect may be buried under the launch of Halo 3, along with other 360 titles. Eternal Sonata will be drop dead gorgeous, but have a compeltly inane and typical JRPG storyline.

I have a hard time believing it's that high already. I mean it's a little early for them to have that many preorders. I will preorder it myself. But I kind of think its too early to worry about it. I would have done it in june/july now I'll do it tommorrow and I'll ask how many they've been getting. Pokemon got 500,000, is it really possible they could have gotten 8 times that 5 months early? At that rate they'll probably get 2 million more and that just seems insane. So I'm thinking the number more realistically is below a million and maybe at launch at 1.5 to 2 million. But who knows, if it is true Halo could really give the 360 a second wind.

Lair is late July and Heavenly Sword is Septemeber

The reason that people think the Uncharted will be so good is if you first look at the Crash and Jak series with Naughty Dog, then you look at the screenshots

I can agree with most of that. I feel it's safe to say that if MGS4 doesn't launch to compete with Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc., Sony is going to be delivered an ass-whoopin' of monstrous proportions this holiday season, especially in the US. It will be ugly. Sony needs a AAA franchise to release this holiday season to even hope to stop MS from stomping them.

About Bioshock, I'm inclined to agree. I expect the game to receive rave reviews, garner massive awards, and sell about 1 to 1.5 million copies, or about 1/5th of Halo 3. Even that is kinda a best-case scenario for Irrational Games. I think they'll make money on it (in fact, I'm almost sure they will), but it will fade away in the GTA IV/H3 storm that's starting to brew. The same applies to Mass Effect. Bioware kinda screwed the pooch by pushing back their release date. It should do decently (again, to rave reviews), but it will get lost in the shuffle somewhat.

Geeze... what happened to kwaad and your mother today? Anyhoo, I was one of those pre-orders for halo 3. I was there when halo 2 hit the stores..... does anyone remember how quickly those sold out and how many were sold? I believe that halo 3 will really repeat halo 2's launch and I just hope I can get my hands on a copy during launch day. but.... if I was forced to... I would chose to MGS4 over halo 3. Nothing irks me more than to leave a great story unfinished but I have invested in more titles in the MGS series ( 5 actually) to let that one go.

15 million sold total? Of Halo 3? Even to me the 4 million in preorders sounds awfully high. I can see the game sales total in the 5-8 million range over it's life. But 15 million? I think you are greatly overestimating that number. And whatever it is you are smoking, please don't bogart it and pass it this way.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

GTA SA only managed 14M despite having a user base of over 100M at that time, plus it was the greatest game of its era
