Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS4 confirmed by Naughty Dog at 5GB RAM for games, 6 cores available to games

This was basically known by people like me but there was a lot of resistance.

I have it on good authority (a former Sony engineer who helped develop PS4) that the PS4 also reserves a roughly similar amount of GPU to XBO. I could get a link for that, but really dont feel like it right now as I'd have to search it.

Anyways, it's basically that PS4 has all similar OS reserves to Xbox  One. We can lay that to rest.

I say this because I was involved in many tech debates months ago here, and many people claimed to me basically that PS4 had little or no OS reserves compared to XBO.

TBH I think both companies are reserving power so that later games look better. I know for a fact that a few systems have done this thus far. PS4s UI cant possibly take up 3 gbs

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Well find the link then. I have seen nothing saying the PS4 has anywhere near the OS reserves the XBOne does (not saying it does not but would like proof) (talking specfically about the GPU)

Also what are 2 of the 8 cores doing? If 2 cores do nothing but run the OS that is a pretty large overhead (not to mention 3 GBs of ram)

The debate was regarding flexible memory which later got cleared up.

I want a source on "people claimed to me basically that PS4 had little or no OS reserves compared to XBO", or it never happened.

its obvious that the UI doesn't take 3gb of ram. Now they just have a lot of room to add stuff to the console without worrying about ram. One of the reasons why the ps3 didn't have cross chat. They "Future proofed" it this time around.

What does the CPU core count have to do with the GPU reserve? nub. I wasn't part of that original argument but what you are stating sounds ridiculous as hell is all.

It is impossible to have no OS reserves lol. I am just curious about the GPU reserves on the PS4.

Very good point, probably why it takes 2 whole cores of the CPU as well

Find me a source of anybody who ever DID claim the PS4 had as much reserves as Xbox One, LOL. That never happened. Like literally never, except me, on the entire internet ever, LOL.

I'll try to find a link later, fixing to nap!

The PS4 GPU reserve thing will just be a link to a forum post on Beyond3D from a former Sony employee, so you'll have an out to claim it isn't real if you wish, but it clearly is. GPU reserves will never be publically stated.

I'm not really sure what's going on. One thing to remember is you can never add more reserves later. If you reserved 2GB and then later decide you need 3, you're just screwed, because some released games will already need 6GB to run.

So it's "better safe than sorry" at the beginning I guess.

It's possible somne the reserves in both consoles could be lowered later. This happened I think on both 360 and PS3, especially PS3 (which reserved a lot more than 360 to start, so they reduced down more,  but still was more than 360).
