Forums - Gaming Discussion - The inflection point for diminishing returns appears to be the PS3/360 generation

BUT... I think pOne games look much much much better...and that's only my opinion now. I can't wait to be blown away by later games.

Wat

EDIT: Oh, I'll assume that's shorthand for PS4/XBone. In that case, I would say that, from what I've seen, they don't look much better at all.

Hence why I said look at Shadow of the Colossus and early ps360 games.

Can you show me a ps360 game that looks as good as the order, or infamous, or quantum break? Sure you might come close, but it's likely whatever game you pick will be a game that was made in the ps360's 7th or 8th year and not anywhere near the first or second. Wouldn't you agree?

To me it is the little things right now. The crispness of the characters, the detail in textures and the smoothness of shadows. Last gen felt like almost in so many regards, then you'd see a texture load or pop in and really weird shadows pull you out. I will be very happy if this gen refines graphics so those nagging issues are thing of the past. I honestly do not get how someone can look at infamous and infamous second son and not see the jump.

I've said this a few times. you really can't get a ton better than games like Uncharted and Last of Us. Most improvements will take place under the hood and they will become harder for the average person to spot.

People saying that the leap from PS3->PS4 will be anything like the leap from PS1->PS2 or the leap from PS2->PS3 are totally crazy in my opinion.

If nothing else the Wii selling so well has proved to me that we have long ago reached good enough for the mass market as far as graphical fidelity is concerned.

I don't mind developers wanting to create better visuals. It's a big part of why many of them joined the industry. I just think it needs to happen on a very dictated budget or else we let the dreams of one generation crash the market and homogenize gaming. If you can't get it to look that good at 20-50 million then maybe it just shouldn't look that good.

I haven't decided if the indie market will save us with its variety and cheap prices or help crash the market much like the Atari with too many trash games.

There certainly is a diminishing return, and it's increasing. At some point what do you believe would be a huge gap with last of us ? Make it 1080p, multiply by 10 the number of polygons, add particules, improve anti-aliasing, make better textures ... would not make the result THAT different.
Also what make it so big is comparing last games of a very long generation to first games of the new generation. And state-of-the-art ps3/xbox 360 to mid-game PC based Xbox one/PS4. Not just the launch price, the manufacture cost is supposed to be half.

Perhaps, and you know what? Doesn't matter. We will (some argue we already have) get to a stage where games look good enough, anything else is bragging rights/surplus.

Nope. Just look back at the horrible-looking launch games for the last gen. It was the same amount of technical advancement from the generation prior. Same thing from 2 generations ago.

Every console in a generation (perhaps N64 is the lone exception) takes generally a year or so before its potential is shown. And honestly I'm tired of this 'diminishing returns' argument. Games are going to look ridiculous in 10 years, just like games do now compared to 10 years ago. Anyone who gives the 'diminishing returns' argument hasn't been in this world long enough to see that the generational advancements continue at the same pace they always have.

Call of Duty 2 Xbox 360

CoD: MW3 Xbox 360

Let's not jump to conclusions, OP

I guess you haven't played Killzone SF on a 1080p projector. Plus MADDER audio adds a lot to immersion, the gun sound changes realistically as you move closer to a wall and through different environments.

And you're comparing late gen games to launch games.

Resistance fall of man:

Killzone SF

Diminishing returns, yeah right.

You said PS4/Xbone games look "much much much better". I'm assuming you mean they look much better than PS3/360 games.

But now you're saying that some games from the PS360 library might "come close" to PS4/Xbone games, so I'm really not sure what your stance is.
