I feel like I need to express the incredible sense of surprise and childlike awe I feel about Donkey Kong Country Tropical freeze.
First of all, Metroid is my favorite gaming franchise of all time. I expected it to be at E3 2013 developed by Retro. Upon the reveal of another f***ing Donkey Kong game, I was disaapointed, and felt that Nintendo was out of touch. Never before has my opinion turned around so drastically.
Regarding the game: In motion, it's straight up beautiful. Silky smooth framerate, intricate backdrops, and amazing character models really meld together. I thought this game looked like an up ressed wii game before actually getting it on my TV. I now think it might be the best looking game on the system.
The levels are just so creative, and so fun. Momentum is good, there are great secrets to find, and platforming in each level has something new. Every level I'm thrown for a loop with something new. The Music adds to this, and is really one of the best soundtracks I've heard in some time.
To conclude, yes, the critics who reviewed this poorly got it so wrong. It's the best platformer on the system, and honestly the best 2D platformer I've ever played.
