They buy "the most powerful" phone because the companies market it as such. The people who buy "the most powerful" phone don't even know what GHz means nor do they care.

 they might not know but its not just about marketing, its about google, the internet and word of mouth,  by thousands of people that care for the best hardware and they will spread around like wild fire, i'm sure most people at best buy, gamestop and other electronics store know the ps4 is more powerful and tell people its better then X1 based on that fact alone.

All those things you mention enter in the marketing and advertisement category.

Word of mouth comes from people who buy the console and share their experiences, and why they bought it in the first place? because they saw an ad with some cool games and/or the console features and they like what they saw. Companies also pay people to say good stuff about their products even if they have never use it before.

If you don't market the console well enough, it won't appear on Google as a first option or even first page, the competition will appear first (that's how Google makes a lot money, companies pay them to prioritize their products over others).

The last one is pure assumption, how do you know that the people who work at those stores tell people to buy a PS4 over a X1? when it comes to expensive stuff, a consumer goes to a store and looks for a specific product that he or she already had in mind, because he or she saw it on TV or a street ad. If a person prefers the X1 and its games over the PS4, the worker at the store won't stop that person from buying it, simple as that. The person would show the games the console has, it features, and of course, the price, the consumer will later make the decision.

Specs (which was your original point) has basically nothing to do with a person making the desicion or not. They can be a selling point, but they are down in the reasons why a normal folk buys a console, price and games alone are (or at least should be) way above specs in terms of reasons as to why to buy a console.

Lucky for XBO, no matter how poorly it performs, it can always count on strong 3rd party support, so it may hold up better in the long run.

Sorry, wasn't counting NPD, One is severly overtracked for January.

OP might want to pop in this thread and convince these guys that NPD numbers are legit though;

I agree about price but specs play a huge role these days, especially when the ps4 is running games in full hd, and they both have the same games aside from a few exclusives.

Xbox One is losing momentum with its price tag. "Expensive hardware with a weaker specs" That's how things are in the market for consumers. No matter how many defending articles like "eSRAM is more efficient" keep coming, it's price will always be the impeding factor.

yup people think this is 2006, where people didn't know about hardware specs, these days most are informed, people always trying to buy the most powerful phones cause of there HD out put and specs.

About phones and tablets, yes.

About videogames, apart from videogame fans, I really doubt that people care about specs.

Yep, but that word doesn´t go much far from the group of real videogame fans, or the so-called "hardore gamers" ( I really hate this ).

Huh... I mean....we don´t see much discussion about videogame specs outside of the videogame community. Most first-time consumers who buy consoles or handhelds are more aware of the game library than its specs. At least in my country, when someone goes on a shop to buy a console the immediate question is:  "What are the games" rather than "which console is more powerful".

As for tablets and phones, people discuss them everywhere when a new model comes.

Xbox Doomed Don Mattrick made the right decision.

i'm not sure, the ps4 is kicking X1 ass and imo its cause of specs and price, but i;m guessing anybody who is gonna spend 400-500$ on a console will do there homework before they lay out that kind of money i mean i sure would.
