Supply constraints on the PS4 obviously.

The Wii was equally supply restained if not moreso. I remember my local radio station would have Wii updates where people would call in if they spotted a Wii at any store so desperate customers could rush over and get one.

I also saw two soccer moms nearly come to blows over the last Wii at a store, lol. That first year or two for the Wii was nuts.

The Wii was targeting another audience. An audience which just bought casual games. The PS4 will outsell it, don't worry.

You have to target the casuals if you want big numbers don't kid yourself.   The PS2 may be the most casual console of all time.    It was a DVD player, cheaper then every other DVD player out there that also played games.   On top of that it had great games too which is why the total in the end was 150+ million.  Wii was the same deal.  It launched with Zelda.  Zelda isn't casual at all.  Wii Sports is 100 percent casual.     You have to lure in both crowds.  Right now PS4 is getting all the Sony fans and is getting alot of the Microsoft fans that jumped ship.    If it doesn't have games / find some way to appeal to casuals it will never get over 80 million.

The PS2 was the cheapest DVD player for the first year alone. So, how do you explain the high sales post year 1?

Also, Zelda didn't sell 20M+ last I checked.

Even after DVD player prices came down some it was still a much better deal to get a PS2 for years combined with the fact that it had a ton of games.   Twilight Princess on Wii sold nearly 7 million and is the 2nd best selling Zelda ever.   It was a huge launch title.  Like i said both the Wii and PS2 were very appealing to casuals and the hardcore.   Hardcores try to bash the Wii now, but for atleast 4 years they were all over it too.   Gamecube was just a hardcore console.   360 was just a hardcore console until Kinect came out and Call of Duty became a mainstream casual title.

7M still pales in comparison to what the games in the "Wii" series sold.

Why would people who are not interested in games buy a PS2 when all they want is a DVD player and they could get one for a lower price? You're forgeting that more than 50M PS2s were sold after 2006.

8th gen doomed?

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

When I saw the title I thought it was a thread from "The Source" :)

I don't think that's a fair comparison since by 2007, you couldn't really find 6th gen console on the shelves anymore but people are still buying lots of 7th gen stuff right now.

or maybe everybody wants a ps4.. and sony can't make them as fast as nintendo made the wii, since nintendo were basically using slightly upgraded 6th gen parts for their console..

while sony is using new gen tech to manufacture the ps4..

Sounds about right, PS4 i just so much better then the other two.

Now let's compare the numbers of 7th gen and 8th gen of handhelds... Have fun.
