The point is not so much the poor sales on Wii U, but that the sales on One and to a lesser extent 4 are not that great for a late port, either.

But the sales of the late ports on WiiU were good enough for the sequels to come to the platform in pretty much all cases.

If the Xbox One version is selling on par and the PS4 version selling 3x the best selling WiiU late ports, then we can assume that the sequels will be coming to these platforms too and that will be the real test of how well PS4One have held up.

You also raised late ports as a reason for the WiiU versions not selling as well.  Take a look at the PS4's current software sales totals and examine the late ports.  The best example is FIFA 14 which was over 2 months later than the PS360 versions yet is on 1.4m at the moment.

Even Injustice, which is a late port also available on PS360; WiiU; Vita; iOS etc. looks like it's going to beat the best selling WiiU late ports, which are from far more popular franchises.

(And speaking of franchise popularity, we were comparing Tomb Raider with Batman before.  Batman on PS360 sold over 9m while Tomb Raider on PS360 sold around 3.5m.  You could take that as "more people have played Batman already!" but I would take it as "Batman is a more popular franchise with more sales potential").

I get where you're coming from with this but I feel like you're trying to argue points that aren't really there to make WiiU's failures seem better.

No, I could really care less about Wii U's failures.  I was simply making a (only half-serious) point that late ports do poorly.  Tomb Raider did relatively poorly whether you're comparing it to other titles on 4One, or to its previous release on PS360.  I don't actually think 3rd parties should or will drop support for XBOne.  But 3rd parties have given very poor support for titles on Wii U in terms of release dates, content, price and promotion, and they are getting the corresponding sales results.  If every 3rd party game on 4One was like TR:Late Port Eddition, Wii U would look much less weak in comparission.  But that isn't the case.

Also, FIFA is a poor example to bring up because a) it's FIFA, b)it was only delayed a couple months and c) it was a bundled title.

1) If "it's FIFA" was enough, then why is the WiiU verison on 140k LT sales?

2) Even worse.  A late port like Batman on WiiU at least has some enhanced features making it different from the previous releases.  FIFA was merely the same game as on PS360 but a couple of months later (at which point you'd expect everyone who wanted it to have bought it).

3) No, it wasn't.  It was bundled as a download code on XB1, but I was directing you towards the PS4 version.  The official PS4 bundles have been using Knack and Killzone.  If there are unofficial retailer bundles that's fine, but those stand true for WiiU games as well.

Also this sentence:

"Tomb Raider did relatively poorly whether you're comparing it to other titles on 4One, or to its previous release on PS360."

If we're using relatives, why don't we say it did relatively well when you're comparing it to WiiU late ports?

I can see you're not going to change your stance on this one though, so we're just going to go around in circles without a conclusion if we carry on with this.

Publishers dont support Wii U not because of later ports, they saw that even bundled launch exclusive games like zombiU dont sell very well on Wii U ( to compare, Dead Rising 3 sold 1M in 2 month when zombiU sold 630k in 1 year and 3 month ) , they saw that even port sell very poorly on Wii U ( assassin's creed 3 or Black flag or COD sales compared to the equivalent on PS4/One )

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

Tomb Raider: DE is selling like old "updated" ports did on Wii U. I wonder if 3rd parties will cancel future projects or delay them?

Err...

Batman Arkham City is the best selling updated WiiU port I can find in the DB.  It sold 33k globally first week.  Tomb Raider sold 60k in the USA, first week (or you can divide them by platform, if you prefer).  We know that it got another 27k (or you can divide them by platform, if you prefer) from the UK alone.  I don't really see how that's selling like old "updated" ports did on WiiU.

Yes, I see no reason why you would combine platforms, so you should divide.  There were several Wii U late ports that did very similar to Tomb Raider.  They did a little better than TR on One, worse than PS4 but in the same ballpark.

My comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but the point is real: Old ports of PS360 games aren't going to sell well.  3rd parties blamed Wii U for it, but really the result is not unique to that system.

Okay.

I imagine most Wii U users bought Arkham City because they probably never had a chance of playing the game in the Wii aside from the graphical differences, right?

While most next-gen users who bought TR:DE probably wanted to play it solely for the graphical differences. The incentive of buying a game you already played is too small for the next-gen console owners that I'm astounded the PS4 version even sold better than Wii U's best selling ported PS360 game during its first 3weeks in 2 countries alone.

You're confused, because you're thinking of things in "brand loyalty" terms, which might be you, but is not the general consumer.  I picked up a Wii U, but my last system was a 360.  I played AA on 360 and loved it, but didn't bother picking it up until years after its release.  So I still hadn't played AC when it came out for you and thus I picked it up for that system since I wanted to see the Gamepad features and bonus content, and I like using the Wii U better than my 360.

That is who you are generally selling old ports to - the people who didn't bother picking up the title on its original release.  I doubt very few of the PS4/One buyers were people who had already played through it last year.  It was people who hadn't bought it but thought about it, and decided to pick up the best version when it came out.  Although I'm sure there are some extra-hardcore fans with who would buy a game twice in one year.

All of your receipts are based on assumptions that Wii U users aren't Nintendo fans who have two or three consoles from the previous gen and that most TRDE buyers didn't bought the PCS360 versions which contrary to your opinion isn't really popular tbh when we're dealing with late ports.

The general belief on late ports is it won't sell that much on next gen consoles related to your previous gen console of your choice which already has the same game on its library.

With that on mind, Arkham City selling less on Wii U is an anomaly.

It's going in circles because it's off the main point I made.  Even if TR does double or tripple or more than a title such as Batman:AC (which launched on a userbase 1/10th of what TR is launching to), the the title is still a relative bomb when compared to it's earlier release or other releases on 4One that are not late ports.  At .1 of the sales of top software on 4One and .03 of the sales of the original release, it is - mathmatically speaking - much, much more of a realative bomb compared to other releases and at 2-4X Batman:AC much, much closer to Wii U late ports, relatively speaking.  It isn't really up for debate where its sales lie.  4X and 30X are not relatively close.  It is far more accurate to say that it performed similar to Wii U late ports than to say it performed much better than them.

Who has this "general belief" and what data is it base on?

X1 can still win because of kinect and the casual mass market. But a price drop will be needed soon. For hardcore gamers however, the X1 GPU is just too weak in order to compete with PS4.

This needs to stop.  If being a launch game is such a detriment to the sales of a title then you'd never see anything but first party software on a console at launch, ever.  Userbase doesn't matter as much when there's launch hype and people are picking up titles to play on their new machine.

If it's really bothering you that much then why don't we use an improved late port on WiiU instead, like Deus Ex which opened to a 3k first week and 36k LTD?  But that would obviously make matters a lot worse, so...

Then yeah, we're just talking about different things.

To use the PS4 as an example (because it's what I've been going with so far), Tomb Raider has sold 114,978 in Europe + USA (with more regions to come).  The top selling PS4 game (both at launch and LT, as far as I can tell) is CoD Ghosts.  FW in Europe + USA was 625,470.

114,978 / 625,470 * 100 = 18.38%.

If we compare it to Arkham City WiiU (since we've been using it all along), which had a FW in Europe + USA of 35,577:

35,577 / 114,978 * 100 = 30.94%.  Not exactly close, but far closer than the picture you were trying to paint.

So .18 compared to .31.  Sure, if you want to be absolutely correct you can say it was more of a bomb compared to other PS4 launch titles than Arkham City was a bomb compared to Tomb Raider.  But again, Tomb Raider was a vast improvement (both in terms of sales and revenue) over the sales of Arkham City; sales which were good enough to ensure the next instalment came to WiiU.  And at the end of the day, isn't "getting the userbase familiar with the franchise in preparation for the next instalment" what these late ports are all about?

I think in all cases it was about milking exsisting assets for some extra cash.  Especially in TR's case.  With Batman and several of the other Wii U shovel ports, I think they were making sure they didn't miss out on the chance to grab some money on the next Wii craze and get a presence early - which of course didn't happen.  These late ports are easy extra sales that they (obviously) didn't get on the first release, and they can often charge a premium for the version on the new system.

And yes, the userbase does matter.  Wii U was in around a million homes at the launch of Batman.  PS4 and XBOne are in 3-5X that with Tomb Raider.  So having 2-3X the sales is natural, especailly with userbases so small.

Especially when looking at the One version of TR, it's really in the same ballpark as the late port's on Wii U in terms of sales and attach rates.
