Forums - Sales Discussion - Ps4 outsold Wii U 3.5 times this week. Is it time to panic?

Yes, PS4 selling only 3,5 times more than Wii U is bad, Sony really needs to send more supply ( or vgc needs to stop underestimating PS4 sales)

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

PS4? Forget PS4, Nintendo needs to work hard just to get the Wii U to sell at GameCube levels.

I also have the feeling those VGChartz Wii U numbers for the US market are overtracked.

What would bring you to that conclusion? They were substantially undertracked last time compared to NPD.

Nintendo projected 2.8 million for this fiscal year not to long ago, witch is till the end of March. VGChartz already has the Wii-U at 2.8 million from March last year, with about 10 weeks of sales to go. Sure Wii-U will have smaller stock now, but even at Wii-U sales levels we are talking 400k-500k.

Nintendo reported 5.86M WiiU shipped by Jan 1st 2014

The amount that PS4 outsold WiiU by is kinda irrelevant. If the PS4 sold 500K and the WiiU sold 143K, it doesn't mean the WiiU sold bad, it just means the PS4 sold extremely well.

Nintendo shouldn't be panicking that the PS4 outsold the WiiU by 3.5x. They should be concerned that it only sold 42k, making 3.5x easily achievable

Well, it looks like the PS4 will Surpass the WiiU soon. Probably before the release of Second Son which will definitely be a million seller in a short period (2-3 weeks after release) of time and move a lot consoles

It was already time to panic January last year.

Should Nintendo start panicking and try something crazy? Or should they be patient and see if Smash and Mario Kart can breathe new life into the Wii U?

Thoughts?

Not yet, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is coming in a few weeks and that should help to stabilize the sales a little bit, now in march we can panic, the next reknown will come in May (Mario Kart 8), so there is a big gap there that will make the sales drop a lot. A Nintendo Direct with more release dates could help the situation.

Like others have said, the time to panic was april/may 2013. I recently bought the WiiU and I had to double take what came with it.... Inside the box, it said that the Wiiu tablet will double as a floatation device!!!

It is near the end of the end....

The worst thing Nintendo could do right now is panic. They need to "appear" to be holding steady with the Wii U, whilst sorting out their contingency behind the scenes (which based on what Iwata has been saying, is what they will be doing)

But for this year, business as usual for Wii U, get the main games out, if they really do have to throw the towel in early, they need to do something which doesn't alienate their Wii U audience, whether this is "trade in your Wii U and get our replacement for $99" or whatever. They just can't afford to tarnish their brand in the way SEGA did with the 32X/Saturn fiasco.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Have you even read their recent investors conference? NintendOS? QOL? DS VC? They're already starting to try crazy things. Just not with the Wii U lol.

Well first things first: Nintendo doesn't care what Sony or MS do in all regards.

Also, X1 is a more valid comparison as it creeps up on WiiU's sales week after week.
