Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo announce new 3rd pillar platform for 2015

The investor meeting is over, and a new 3rd pillar blue ocean platform will be released next year. This system will apparently be affordable and completely focused on improving your quality of life.

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/01/29/live-nintendos-strategy-briefing-to-address-future-direction/

From GAF:

Summary from the briefing:

Wii U
- The problem is that people think it's an accessory for Wii
- They can't cut the price
- The Gamepad needs to be emphasized more
- The first game to emphasize the Gamepad will be Mario Kart 8, which uses off-tv play
- They will announce NFC games at E3.

General Direction
- No major changes in company's direction
- Further hardware R&D will continue
- They won't release games on other peoples platforms, including mobile
- They want to have a platform where the platform is not the device, but rather the user (IE integrated over multiple hardware platforms)
- They are considering a streaming service
- They have solved technical hurdles related to Virtual Consoles
- They will license characters to new partners -- it's unclear if this means merchandise or games

QUACK ZONE WARNING QUACK ZONE
- Nintendo wants to get into health care and wellness and lifestyle products
- They want to improve your quality of life
- This has nothing to do with games
- They want to announce ways to make you healthy
- This will not involve wearable devices because there are too many of those.
- This is integrated with games
- This will launch in April 2015

Is this an ingenious new direction to go or is Iwata batshit insane?

To me it seems Nintendo will have a 3 pillar strategy going forward:

1. A platform entirely focused on Wii Fit/Brain Age - style games.

2. A home entertainment system focused entirely on traditional games.

3. A portable entertainment system focused entirely on traditional games.

No idea what to think of this.

Nintendo and PC gamer

Uhhhhh... That's weird... I guess I'll have to see it if I'm going to believe this. Not sure what the benefit of this is rather than integrating it with the Wii U. I guess we'll see more at E3, but my initial impression is that this is a bad idea.

People don't want to pay $300 for a Wii U. Nintendo likely figured it would be better just to make this a seperate platform. If it's a $25 health product, tying it to a $200+ console kills its appeal.

Damn! I was too slowXD

I tihnk this could end up being a good idea. We have to wait and see Nintendo's bussiness plan this year.
