PlayStation's president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has ruled out the possibility of offering PS4 owners the option to disable the DualShock 4's light bar. Yoshida addressed fans via Twitter after the exec was quizzed on the likelihood of a "future update" that may offer the ability to turn off the illuminated panel on the upper surface of the controller for games that make no use of it.

"No," replied Yoshida, in response to the question.

Common complaints from players and critics include the light bar reflecting in the TV screen and the controller's relatively short battery life (around 7 hours) compared with the DualShock 3.

When it was later implied such a feature would help extend the controller's battery life, Yoshida added, "The LEDs do not use much battery".

Proof it does affect battery HERE (basically, math shows it almost doubles the life span) Granted, I'd think during actually play the other functions, especially feedback, would affect battery far more.

So PS4 users here on VGC, is this an issue for you? Are you too taping your controller due to reflection on TV?

Wii U has a similar-ish issue in Netflix in that the gamepad screen stays on. But, doesn't bother me.

Not a really an issue for me, I don't even notice the light on the controller.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

There are lights on the PS3 controller too. (The little red ones). I'm not sure if they use more or less power than the LEDs on the PS4 controller.

And those were perfectly aceptable and not distracting. Now I need to know what color means what player. Seriously, what is the issue for the option. Is it gonna kill them to add it in? If it's a issue dealing with dumb people leaving it off when motion control modes are needed. Add a stupid in game prompt.

I like the light. When I'm playing in the dark, it helps me to see all those buttons on my remote control!

Would still be nice if it was optional though.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Giant issue for me. I hate the DS4 even without the annoying light but that just gives it the rest. I don't know why Shuhei has to be such a dick about this. Why wouldn't he even consider it?
Can't wait to get my hands on the first 3rd party controllers.

Since He's a dick about the light I guess compatibility for the DS3 is out of the question as well.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I find it ridiculous that they won't give you the option to something so simple.
I have a Plasma TV and the light bar on the DS4 can be extremely obnoxious reflecting on the screen. Ended up covering the thing with electrical tape but needless to say it's ugly as hell.

7 hours is considered short?

It can be a little too bright at night, they should at least allow you to adjust the brightness.

Believe me though guys, it can get a lot brighter. I plugged it into my PC and turned the brightness up to maximum, it was brighter than my lamp.

giant issue? do you hate seeing a few things in front of you with a blue tint that much?

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Skyrim 100%'d. Dark Souls 100%'d.
Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.
Proud pre-orderer of 2 PS4's and an Xbox One.

I think the problem is that the light in on the fron tof the controller and will be reflected on surfaces in front of it.

I think its obvious Sony needs to give an option to turn it off.

If it doubles the battery life, its well worth it aswell. Sorry but i dont very much care for a light with little purpose that shouldnt be there in the first place eating up battery life. I agree.

Actually... im a bit disappointed that Yoshida is already going back to the arrogance days of Sony. Certainly not a good statement there.

Give the consumer a choice. Its not something you should refuse to. If theres a game that uses it put up a warning on that game.
