I think you are not getting it. MS isn't trying to compete with those services. They want to integrate those services within the X1 so the user has a seamless experience. Currently I have Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime and crunchyroll. Sony service will just be that, another service I would decide to user or not use with the existing ones I have. MS is not trying to create another service just like all of these streaming services. Instead MS solution is to integrate those services within the X1 so the user experience is seamless. Case in point.
As an example: If I say, Xbox play "Attack On Titan". If the system knows what shows or movies are on what service and go there and play it, usability on my end is greatly improved instead of me having to go to that app or service, find the show or movie and play it. The reason MS went with the HDMI in is because the X1 software runs everything. It can go from your streaming services like Netflix to your live TV from your cable box or from your cable app like Verizon FIOS. You do not have to switch inputs to go from one device or another on your TV instead you just tell the X1 what you want.

They wanted a system that just plays games and now they are talking about TV? lol

How surprising?
Sony's is better. And importantly has been revealed better and doesn't require 2 boxes!

What did expect the PS4 to only play games? I suppose you've never heard of the PS3?
I would say out of these two Sony's is the better idea, streaming netflix type service with all their movies and content... could be a win win... and definitely better than MS's hardware type strategy without any real useful content (as of yet).
*BUT* will it compete with Netflix/Lovefilm which is what I would do... I don't think it will. I just don't think PlaystationNow is a good name... SonyNow would have been better. Who knows, guess we will see.

Don't know how the PS4 TV service is going to turn out, but if it's an actual service then it already wins. My TV can already do everything the Xbox One can except me saying what channel I want to go to and recording with DVR. I can save myself $60 a year and do without both of those features. Or, I can hook my cable cord to my PC capture card, watch TV on there, and record it for free. PC wins so far. |
This is incorrect. The X1 does not require a cablebox because it can run cable apps like the 360 can without the cablebox. This I believe is where a lot of confusion is coming from. If your cable provider does not have an app then you can use the HDMI in. If your cable provider has a supported app then you use the App and ditch the cablebox.
The thing is most cable companies are creating apps to access their content from devices like the 360 and X1 without the box. I believe people are thinking Sony IPTV will kill cable but I think people are putting the cart before the horse. Million of users use cable and Satellite services. Those services are not going anywhere soon and I doubt that Sony can shake up the industry anymore than Netflix or Hulu which is also their competition.

http://bgr.com/2014/01/07/sony-cloud-based-tv-service-launch/
It was revealed at CES 2014
Im not really sure I follow this one but wow those comments xD Mr Angry Pants 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and so on lol
Well Sony and Microsoft both seems to be adding to their libraries of channels. Maybe one day they'll both be able to rival Cable companies one day. We can only hope they dont have the same ridiculous pricing as cable companies.
Microsoft is also making their own tv shows now. Example would be Halo, Quantum Break, and Heroes. Which is def a cool idea.
Then you have sony who is making movies like Heavy Rain, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo, etc. Then again those aren't on sony consoles but branches from their movie division.
When it comes down to it I dont really compare TV companies to one another as most people dont. I just watch them and enjoy them.
Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad? Who cares if theyre made by different people if theyre both good :)
