Forums - Gaming Discussion - Was Sony's focus on late last gen triple A a failure?

I still think this AAA paradigm is going to kill the industry

while MS parades a better initial XBO lineup around.

That gave me a big laugh.

Forza great game, lacks content 82 metacritic.

25 Metacritic-Fighter Within

48 Metacritic-Lococycle

56 Metacritic-Crimson Dragon

god I can go on, but I won't.

That "better" launch lineup is filled with games that are objectively mediocre to just utterly bad and is composed of only 2 good games.

for the fact Sony's first party studios have been able to compose a Game of The Year contender for the last 4 years in a row is amazing

God of War 3, Uncharted 3, Journey, The Last of Us.

5 years.  Uncharted 2 in 09.  Oh and MGS4 was exclusive to PS3 despite not being made by Sony, not to mention LBP released in 08

Well Beyond certainly won't give Sony a profit. GT6 is a no brainer for profit, but it won't have the legs that GT5 had.

It is almost like these games were made as a PR stunt, disregarding maximum profit and only did it so the forums can praise them for supporting PS3 so late in the gen.

making great games for your console at the end of it's time in spotlight (not life) is a lot more than a PR stunt.  It's called long-term support.  A PR stunt would be saying you're going to do that and not or giving it half-baked games or games from your suckier studios.  Puppeteer, Beyond, and Last of Us have been 3 of my favorite games from this gen.  Puppeteer and LoU are in my top 10 for the ENTIRE gen.  It just reaffirms that I made the right decision with Sony.  PR stunts end in disappointment.  This support did not.  Speaking of PR, their MARKETING completely failed with everything other than LoU.  They should have been shoving these new games in people's faces especially the new IPs.  They need to be made aware.  My 3 apartment mates saw me playing Puppeteer and were in awe of the visuals and gameplay and asked what it was.  That means Sony marketing failed.

That Sony marketing failed to bring these games in the mass markets eye, and were only noticed by the loyal fans/core gamers, tells mem that the games in themselves were PR in nature. They literally made games as PR stunts so the gaming internet would continue to praise them. Sales.......sales are a bonus at this point and certainly is not the main objective here imo

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Ahem, the highlights are Forza, DR3, and Killer Instinct (whos metascore is only hampered by lack of content, not gameplay).

PS4 is highlighted by KZ, in which you should be playing BF4 or COD anyway fro your FPS fix. Essentially the "shooter box" is highlighted by 3 genres that aren't shooters.

Give credit to where its due.

so...you think Sony wanted these games to not make money (ie not sell)?  I don't think you know what a PR stunt is.  If PR is trying to sell to a small minority on the internet then they aren't doing their job well.  Sony makes games to make money off those games.  The quality of these games is obviously top notch (Beyond is love it or hate it but I haven't heard of anyone trying Puppeteer and not liking it).  That tells me they're not PR.  If they had all gotten bad reviews or looked like SNES games that cost $50 to make then I could say they were PR.  If they were 3rd party games and Sony acted like they were proof of late gen support then I could call them PR.  High quality games with full visions are anything but PR.  Software support in general might as well be called PR at that point.

I know you said in your opinion but that still doesn't make sense. I guess I just don't see how continuing to support your system with new exclusive games can be called a PR stunt. So thene very game they are releasing next year would be a PR stunt then....that just seems odd if you ask me.

Better to focus on "last gen" while it is still strong. More money to be made there for the next 2 years at least
