Playstation lost when it comes to profit.
Xbox lost when it comes to sales.

Games are subjective so Wii lost when it comes to flavor. If somebody asks you to taste their Wii, don't do it.

In business, those terms are a bit worthless, to be honest. Corporations aren't fixated on 'generations', they're looking at the entire picture.

If we had to break it down like that, though, then I think they all did well, which is amazing.

Microsoft jumped their level of market share by a huge margin. They have to be extremely pleased with that. They took some blows to brand image, yes, but they pretty much shrugged that off. They left the gen in much better shape than they started.

Sony has to be happy with how well they recovered. The early gen was a nightmare. The PS3 started off slowly, the Wii went viral, and Microsoft had a year's head-start. Let's be clear, Microsoft's money (and Halo) made it a foregone conclusion that the PS3 would not have the PS2's market share. Sony did not "lose" that to Microsoft; Microsoft took it. Sony left the generation with all the momentum, though, which I think has translated well for the brand.

The Wii made lots and lots of money. It didn't finish well and I think that hurt the Wii U, but judged only by its upside, the Wii was a monster.

I'm no business-ologist but I figure none of the big three look at winning or losing the way we do.   They're probably just concerned with whether or not they made huge profits and if there is potential to profit in the future.

Nobody lost this gen though, thats why we cant decide. Its the closest gaming will ever be

if you can't look at the numbers and tell that it was the Wii, no matter whether it hurts your soul or not, you've got some kind of brain problem.

It's like having Italy winning the Fifa World Cup championship and then asking who won it... it was fucking Italy. It scored more and outgoal'd everyone.

Wii sold more units and software than any of the other two. Deal with it. Forever :p

I would say PS3 lost, when it comes to actual software sales and PS+ memberships there just wasn't enough profit to beat the 360. Microsoft did great growing their fanbase in a Sony/Nintendo gaming world.

Did you know Uruguay won the first and inaugural World Cup?

Think about what I mean by that for a minute.

Its clear that Sony lost a massive amount of marketshare last gen(over the previous gen), so I consider them losers, though they sold very well.

After seeing how everything played out and how the industry has grown as much as it did, losing a lot of marketshare seems like it would have been a given.

Between PS2, GC and XBox we had ~200M sold. Now when all is said and done we might see over 300M for Wii, PS3 and 360.

The fact that the market has grown so much is why the PS3 clearly lost this generation. They went from a ~150 million userbase to a ~80 million userbase in a flourishing industry while Wii had zero third party support and the 360 had all kinds of hardware failures and costly online subscriptions.

Sony fucked up, they failed to grab the mass audience. They have really redeemed themselves with quality support later on and the PS4 will profit from that. In a broader sense though, no one lost this gen. There are only winners as I think all three companies are in healthy place right now.

Well thats true but staying at the football analogy the championship is over when its over. And its not over yet.

Early on, 360 did very well.

Halo 3 hype was at an all time high.... Now after milking the series so much, the hype for Halo5 isn't nearly as much.

BioShock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Saints Row, Dead Rising, Crackdown... 360 had a very nice exclusive line up early on in its life cycle, while PS3 was still struggling to get exclusives.

Then PS3 started getting Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, Killzone, InFamous, Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo, Journey, etc.... while 360 lost most of its exclusives.

PS3 eventually caught up in sales, mostly thanks to the PS3 Slim and price cut. Now going into next gen Sony has all the momentum while MS isn't looking so hot right now.

PS3 made the biggest comeback in console history.

I still don't get the market share gained/lost philosophy either, at least in context of strictly winning or failing. Did the Mega Drive succeed and the SNES failed? Vice-versa?
