The days of Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, and Jak & Daxter filling PlayStation consoles worldwide are long gone, and may never come back. With the release of Sony’s latest console, the PS4. The firm has successfully transitioned the fanbase from platform and RPG fans, to shooter and online multiplayer fans, in about one generations’ time.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Sony’s core fanbase, are mainly shooting game fans. Even going back to the PS3, the best-selling exclusive franchise for Sony, outside of Gran Tursimo, was Uncharted. The best-selling games for the PS3, all involved some sort of gunplay. Out of the top 10 best-selling games on PS3, seven of them are shooters. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty Black Ops, Call of Duty Black Ops 2, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 are all in the top six. All of those games sold an excess of 10 million units as well.

Looking at the PS4′s launch, it was dominated by shooters. Call of Duty Ghosts sold to 70% of people who purchased a PS4 within the first day it was sold. Battlefield 4 sold 396,187 units at launch. While Killzone Shadow Fall sold 355,148 units. The top three games sold on PS4, are all shooter, and outsold the rest of the lineup 1,454,973 to 962,353. (EA only sold 21,652 units of NBA Live 14, LOL – KARMA)

Just two generations ago, the PS2 had games like Need for Speed Underground, Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, Final Fantasy X, Dragon Quest, and Gran Turismo 3 in the top 10 for sales. Man, how times have changed.

Shooters are clearly the present and future of the PlayStation brand. Sony wanted to be in direct competition with Microsoft, and they definitely are. Microsoft was known for shooters in the 6th & 7th generation. However, the PS4 can now be dubbed the ‘shooterbox 4′.

It’s very telling when God of War Ascension on the PS3, almost gets outsold by the PS4 version of COD Ghosts, on day one. The PS3 has an install base of 80 million, the PS4 just launched! PlayStation gamers tastes have clearly moved on to shooters. This leaves games like Need for Speed Rivals and Injustice, to flop like a fish on day one.

This ‘shooter’ obsession really started on the PS3, and will now be in full effect on the PS4. Of course there will be some games that break this trend like Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3. But just like the PS3, shooters will tower over the majority of games in sales and play time. Old relics like me just haven’t accepted this new age of playing . And to be honest, I don’t think I ever will.

Just for the record, i like shooters. there fun at times. the reason of this article is just for laughs so dont get to butt hurt. "sales dont lie" XD lol

wait till crash bandicoot returns on ps4 ;- ) also there is infamous, uncharted, driveclub, indies and many other non fps shooters coming to ps4. Playstation has always offered a diverse lineup and I think that the trend will continue.

Its not specific to any platform, the demographic is changing, the best selling games on PC are shooters too. The online connectivity is everywhere, a good internet is a standard in any household. Naturally, shooters are a whole lot easier to pick up and play in a multiplayer environment, its a genre that's popular with any teen, any competitive players, any dude bros. You just can't beat fps as a genre, the developers are jumping into this wagon too.

Intel core i7 930 OC @ 4.0 ghz

XFX Double dissipation Radeon HD 7950 356 bit 3gb GDDR5 OC @ 1150 MHz core + 1575 x 4 memory

Triple channel DDR 3 12gb RAM 1600 MHz

I found it unfortunate too that shooters dominate. Especially Call of Duty. But on Playstation side there is hope with some very promising indies (Mark of the Beast, Rime) and the some nice exclusives soon like DriveClub, inFamous and the Order.

Unfortunately that's what the audience wants. It's not like Sony didn't try in the recent years with the PS3 with those aforementioned titles, they all flopped bad.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Unfortunately as much as gamers hate to admit it, gaming is a business. If your biggest sellers are shooters, systems will gravitate to provide more and more shooters. Look at the launch titles. PS4 has 3 big name shooters. All 3 are selling well (top) of the lists.

i said so a long time ago

edit: called it 3 months ago

It just launched..... I can see having this discussion in about 2 years when there is an actual library of games to make such a claim.... but its way too early.

The shooterbox is right, and also depressing as well. I'm not entirely against FPS, but it depress me to see that the top four best selling games on the PS3 are Call of Duty series.

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games
