Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata Says Nintendo doesn't fear Failure.

“If you do the same thing as others, it will wear you out. Nintendo is not good at competing so we always have to challenge [the status quo] by making something new, rather than competing in an existing market.”

Is that Nintendo's weakness??

This quote itself is very interesting to me.

So everytime Sony and/or Microsoft said they weren't competing with Nintendo it was the truth?

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Really though, fearing failure is important. If you don't, what reason do you have to bother innovating? You just have to ensure you use that fear to push your ideas to a higher quality, rather than letting it hold you back.

Self improvement.

Smart people know that ones biggest enemy and the only person one has to prove something to is oneself. Competition and trying to be better than other people is stoneage mentality.

@topic: It's curious to hear Iwata say that "Nintendo is not good at competing" while the intention of the Wii U is partially that, competing for the PS360 and now PS4/XB1 marketshare. I'm happy he keeps up the attitude that Nintendo should do its own thing, because they should, but it's a funny contradiction.

No amount of pushing "ideas to a higher quality" can guarantees success. In other words, the chance of failure is always a reality.

What he is saying makes sense. Nintendo is a company that has always taken risks, some greater than others. But it is this willingness and wealth of creative game developers that has allowed them to succeed.
