Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Are Pikmin 3 FW sales proof enough for you that the Wii U is not doomed?

It doesn't prove anything, really. 22k is still really low and its unlikely to maintain even that level of sales. The game itself is also unlikely to have legs as it isn't a very popular IP and the install base is too low to support it.

We've seen it with Vita. It gets a semi-big game once in a while and it gets a nice boost only to drop back down to "normal" a few weeks later. What's the next biggest Wii U release that can actually make any sort of difference?

There are a bunch of games coming out starting in august for NA, idk about Japan, but if one niche game can increase sales by 250% in only 2 days.  Imagine what the ridiculous lineup this fall and winter will do.

You should know that percentage increases can be misleading when dealing with low sales. In this case Wii U went from disastrous to just bad.

It's not any more doomed than the Vita is in Japan.

Why do you people keep saying this "2 days" thing? Don't all new game releases only get 2 days?

Anyway Pikmin isn't exactly "niche". It's being made by Miyamoto isn't it? That alone should speak for the quality of the game. Do I even need to mention  the heavy promotion of this game over the past year? This is the Nintendo's first major 1st party effort for Wii U.

Sales increase from 8k to 20k. Wooow. Maybe Wii U can hope to reach Gamecube sales after all. Good thing it has an incredibly diverse lineup going for it to keep the momentum going.

@VGKing Pikmin will definitely have legs and is fairly popular, unless you consider 500k not very popular.

Hope to acheive Gamecube sales? It'd bet the bank it will easily surpass that ( Will probably fall between Wii and Nes sales once everything is said and done).

In Japan? Lego City Undercover releases in a week (LEGO games haven't sold well in Japan so far, but Lego City Undercover may perform better, as it's not based on a western film or franchise, and is releasing on a console with a relatively shallow lineup to date). Yakuza 1+2 HD Collection releases a couple of weeks after that (Yakuza 1 sold better than either Pikmin 1 or 2 in Japan, and Yakuza 2 is the best-selling, having sold nearly 1 million copies in Japan). Then The Wonderful 101 releases a couple of weeks after that.

We don't know the release schedule beyond the end of August, so I can't comment beyond that.

But what you may have missed is the fact that Nintendo began advertising the Wii U again with Pikmin 3 in Japan. So we're likely to see increased sales over a longer period, even before you factor in that Nintendo titles tend to have longer tails than other titles. I'd say we'll be seeing a good 12-15k in the next week's worth of numbers.

Niche != Quality

The first two Pikmin games sold ~1Mil WW each IIRC, Pikmin 3 IS a niche game.

WiiU is still launch aligned above PS3 and Vita(an handheld) in Japan. That right there tells me I have nothing to worry about.

Yes, in Japan.

Lego doesn't sell well in Japan. Certainly won't make any difference in terms of hardware sales.
Neither will Yakuza. I doubt that game will even sell well on Wii U at all.
Wonderful 101 seems like a niche title. But it might do well.

If a heavily promoted 1st party Nintendo title couldn't push many systems how could any of these?

The real hardware push will come with Donkey Kong Country: Tropic Freeze, Wii Fit U, Super Mario 3D World and Wind Waker HD.
