Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft working with the NSA?

To all those people who thought we were just being paranoid about the Kinect, read this article.

"Report: Microsoft Collaborated To Deliver Encrypted User Data To NSA "

"A new report sheds light on the depth of interaction between Microsoft and the NSA's Prism spy program. The report alleges that the Redmond, Washington company collected and/or enabled the collection of private emails and Skype transmissions.

According to the report England's Guardian newspaper, in addition to unencrypted Outlook.com email and SkyDrive files, the NSA has been collecting Skype video since June 2012 and audio as early as November 2010. As you might recall, Skype is the software that powers chat on Xbox One.

Additionally, Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox One will require the Kinect to be on in order to function. The camera and microphone bundle also offers a standby mode so that users can activate the console by voice at any time. Microsoft has also stated that the Kinect can be set to different power states so that it can be fully powered down when not in use. We approached Microsoft for comment on the allegations.

“We have clear principles which guide the response across our entire company to government demands for customer information for both law enforcement and national security issues," a Microsoft representative told Game Informer. "First, we take our commitments to our customers and to compliance with applicable law very seriously, so we provide customer data only in response to legal processes. Second, our compliance team examines all demands very closely, and we reject them if we believe they aren’t valid. Third, we only ever comply with orders about specific accounts or identifiers, and we would not respond to the kind of blanket orders discussed in the press over the past few weeks, as the volumes documented in our most recent disclosure clearly illustrate."

"To be clear, Microsoft does not provide any government with blanket or direct access to SkyDrive, Outlook.com, Skype or any Microsoft product. Finally when we upgrade or update products legal obligations may in some circumstances require that we maintain the ability to provide information in response to a law enforcement or national security request. There are aspects of this debate that we wish we were able to discuss more freely. That’s why we’ve argued for additional transparency that would help everyone understand and debate these important issues.”

The details presented today follow earlier reports in the Guardian and Washington Post that also accuse Apple, Google, Facebook, and Yahoo of being complicit in the Prism spy program."

"Our Take

The implications of Microsoft's alleged complicity with the Prism spy program feed into the fears that many gamers have had about putting a new Kinect in their living rooms. Given that the device is designed to be "always on" for optimal use (even in a low-power state), it's no wonder that some are still begging for Microsoft to cut the cord. As details about Microsoft's possible involvement with Prism continue to emerge, this is shaping up to be another in a long line of communications issues facing the Xbox One."

Why do you think they want to make Kinect mandatory?

To be fair for MS, Apple, Samsung, Google, etc. etc. are in bed with the NSA too.

America is no longer the land of the "free" and hasn't been since the 60s.

True, but now that everyone is "equal" we should be finally truly free, but the Government has been anti-American for the past 40 years.

This kind of stuff should be getting Americans mad, but instead they are too worried about the NFL draft or who wins whatever new hip reality TV show is on. This country is done.

Good point, though what im trying to get through with this article is that our worst fears are realized with what MS is doing with Invasion of privacy, and also with all of those other companies you mentioned to, its just sad that the whole world has to suffer for what these American comapanies are doing.

It's not just Americans though, it's all over the world.. but we no longer live in the United States of America, instead we live in the U.S.S.A.

Don't forget that Microsoft is the first company to have gotten on board with PRISM, they might have even help it.

If your paranoid about MS, be paranoid about all the companies. But better yet vote for government officials that wouldn't allow PRISM to exist anyways. Lets not forget about the cellphones we all carry that have mics and cameras, and gps, etc, and its always on, and always connected.

And this one: http://playeressence.com/microsoft-vs-your-rights-can-they-be-trusted/

Shameless self promotion, but whatever...I really don't care. Bitches be crazy.

I have to wonder with the NSA. The more they learn about the population the more they should realize how meaningless wide scale law enforcement is...but then again it might just be a measure of their "market" strength.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
