Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Source: GameStop Played Huge Role In Microsoft’s Xbox One DRM Reversal

  • The system would allow publishers to decide whether or not copies of their games could be sold at approved retailers. No doubt this set off some alarms at GameStop.
  • Fast forward a couple of weeks and reports were surfacing that GameStop had stopped taking pre-orders for the Xbox.
  • “We were told that we weren’t going to get anymore Xbox One’s,” she said, “because the DRM directly impacted our capital, we were not going to push it as hard as we were the PS4, and that involved stocking less units.”
  •  “No doubt that had something to do with their change of heart, though I’m sure the fan backlash also had something to do with it.”
  • “I was in a conference call shortly after Microsoft’s announcements and the room was ecstatic, ‘Finally, we can finally push the Xbox One,’”

Where's Ben?

Game Stop never stopped taking pre orders. Their website, even though is slightly different from their stores, were still taking pre orders. If there was any issue it would have been pulled across the board. Especially if you are trying to send a message to a billion dollar company who spent billions in creating a DRM like service you are not going to just pull some of your pre orders.

This theory is BS

O BTW Sony as well said all publishers had the choice to exclude used game sales with their games. Nothing came about that did it?

Yet some people still believe it was all Angry Joe and Sony.

Their website may not have, but a lot of people have reported that their local Gamestop had stopped taking preorders.

Makes sense.

gamestop and other big chains are probably also the reason why we still don't get the games cheaper when we buy them as downloads or only after some months or years. they are just too important for sony/microsoft as long as digital isn't big enough. and as long as there is still one company who won't push digital so much, it's just too risky for the other company because gamestop and other retailers will try everything to sell the console which is better for the retail.

if tablets would use disc based games, gamestop would try to throw tablets on us and would use this as their "favourite" device to advertise for.

It wasnt just those two. The whole damn industry and fans outside of the largest money grubbing corporations and corporate douchebags like Cliffy B were breathing down Microsofts neck because they are making gaming a very dark place. Now because of this fix its a better place for their loyal gamers whom they take for granted in such a big way.

Off-topic- Still hate Gamestop. Aside from giving you practically nothing for your trade-ins their employees are oblivious to a lot of news.
