Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony: Online DRM "Up To Publishers"

My concern is that, unlike with the PS3, as it's a standard on the Xbone it'd just be easier to copy it across to the PS4. I expect EA and a few others to do this.

That's not a Sony issue, though. That's solely on the 3rd party developer. The PS4 will have no universal DRM for its titles. Understanding that there is no difference to what the PS3 offers, this isn't newsworthy (not a slight at you, just the article in general).

No I understand what you're saying. But I felt as though people who were signing the praises of the PS4 because of its lack of DRM may have been a tad premature, when it's down to the publisher at least.

Again, this may come to nothing but it is cause for concern.

A bit of a blow, no? Looks like things aren't quite so clean-cut as we thought.

No. Because this isn't really news. They've long said it will be up to the publishers but that they, themselves, would impose no sort of DRM. Thus, it's not news at all.

'Sides, it's the same function as on PS3.

So the difference between PS4 and Xbox One is that PS4 requires physical disc in the machine and Xbox One uses internet to check if you have rights.

Each has benefits.
PS4 makes it easier to transfer ownership, but limits game to 1 physical machine at a time.
Xbox One makes it easier to share ownership across machines (up to 10 family members is the plan), but limits how you can transfer ownership to another family.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Wait, now I am confused. Sony ps4 WILL have DRM for third party titles still?

No, it's up to the publisher if they wish to introduce an "online pass", as it were. Similar to the PS3, but as it's already happening with the XBone I don't see any reason why some publishers at least wouldn't embrace it more when it's the norm.

I would rather deal with online passes... LOL at EA getting rid of them... You think they'll announce a return of online passes now?

So, its the same as the ps3 then.

Woah woah woah, slow down. You judge all that from the immediate aftermath of a conference? I concede the fact that this is no different to the PS3 in principle, but still, your judgement seems somewhat premature.

Although it certainly seems like that right now, a lot can change.

Certainly a possibility, or perhaps a similar system for normal play, say, an "offline pass".

This is all speculation from this point, however.
