As much as it's quite annoying, I can fully understand why they did it. With MS having a service at an identical price, but (at present) offers much less, it will still be used as a one up by many people. Sony is a business after all.

Actually, you can thank Microsoft for this. They gave Sony the window of opportunity they have been looking for. No DRM, no DRM, no DRM... and pay for online games. People still cheer.

I honestly still feel that Sony initially intended to have the drm thing as well but the M$ fallout caused them to change their mind. They can thank M$ in the sense that they copied 360 strategy i.e the subsidized console strategy. Thats M$ was constantly able to undercut on price. At $399, sony will be bleeding money if not for the subscription model. i've always justified not getting PS+ even though I desperately wanted the cloud saves especially. Now I can purchase it with no regrets.

I paid for a gold account for a few years because all my friends played on Live before my 360 dumped out. It's really not that big of a deal but it is funny to see the Sony fans that were so against Live make a complete 180 on the situation. |
Im not doing a complete 180 Im still against it...I stay online on Ps3 so that news sucks but just glad they got the no DRM right and 399 .. still against paying online but what can I do? stand outside of their office with a sign.. still probably wont be a day one purchase for me anyway made that mistake with ps3 and a 600 plus tax console not making that mistake again unless i know the games that are launch appeal to me

I hope they make a feasible monthly plan, I only play online for a month or two at a time between 6-15 months of offline. So an annual plan doesn't work for me
If there is no short term plan, I'll have to hold off my PS4 purchase to offset this extra fee.
Still, nice to hear PS4 plays retail games forever.

well my solution will be simple, free multi-player games on my PS3 and PC, for as long as they last, and stick to single player games only on my PS4!, I am not happy about the online Multi-player requirement being you will need playstation plus+. not going to be paying for it. still play single player online games though, so thats at least something.

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner. I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.
Yeah now that I'm coming off the high that was the Sony e3 that kind of sucks, but I'll still get the 4 for the single player games. Maybe in the future ill get + but I'm glad they are not forcing me to be online like other company's :)
I hated the pay to play online of XBL Gold, but I'm on PS+ and I'll probably remain on PS+ because of the additional content that you get for no additional fee, so while I think online multiplayer being locked being a paywall is complete bs for those of us who don't want to get PS+, doesn't bother me since I'm already on it and I like the service.
It's better than XBL Gold though. XBL Gold is giving two free games a month until the launch of the Xbox One, and then that's it. Sony will continue to give us free games a month for PS3, Vita, and PS4 when it's added, although Drive Club PS+ edition will be a gimped, but free version. It's atleast a better version than getting nothing but still requiring to pay a monthly fee like Microsoft is doing.
In addition to this. The only thing added to PS+ is the multiplayer, so everything else can still included for free. The share button to record and upload videos, cross game chat, apps like Netflix, etc.
PS+
-Discounted Games
-Automatic Game Updates
-Early Access to Beta Programs
-Instant Game Collection
-Immersive Multiplayer On PS4
what if $400 is just for the cheaper model while $500 is for the other model?
Honestly you guys against it because you want to save money, you know the best way to save money? PS+
