Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sunset Overdrive, Fuse, and the state of Insomniac Games (And a sad IG fanboy)

I think these last two games (Fuse and SD) by Insomniac are less than what they can deliver.
Fuse didn`t seem special at all. But we still have to see how SD plays. Maybe it`s better than it seems.

you'll get over it.. They all get older and thing will start to hang down.. Cracks start to appear and you wonder if you still love them... And one day you'll see a new fresh one and dump the old one.. Only looking back at the fond memories you have with her.. Yes i'm talking about women whats this thread about..

Are you telling me that Sunset Overdrive is not a racing game?

It's a lunch tray racing game.

(tl;dr: Sunset Overdrive is why Overstrike became Fuse. Insomniac has really stumbled with their recent games. I'm upset that I can't play all of their games on one console, and I'm also sad that I don't even know if I want to play all of their games anymore.

The only game I want from IG is Ratchet, Resistance is done anyway.

Big Insomniac fan here too.

I kinda share your pain as well. I really like Insomniac but it seems like they had to switch the road they were on because of circumstances out of their control.

Ratchet & Clank is fantastic up to A Crack in Time. All 4 One was a new gameplay concept that is perhaps great but just didn't sit well in the R&C universe. I thought the game was good, but it seemed to have been ignored by most fans because of it's change of direction. Full Frontal Assault has brought it back but even Insomniac made sure R&C was no longer a full retail franchise. With all this said, R&C is definitely dried out for Generation 7 Playstation. R&C games are on a downward spiral in sales for some time now. They should make a full retail PS4 R&C along with the animated film and let R&C be a once or twice per gen franchise. (We have had 7 or 8 R&C games this gen PS3/PSP)

The Resistance franchise has also been in a downward spiral. I'm a big fan of the series (better than Killzone imo) but looking at the sales, and for the sake of Insomniac and Sony, it was best to drop the series. Only one spinoff (Retribution by Sony Bend) was worthy, so no spinoffs are necessary either.

Overstrike looked great. If you ask me, I though All 4 One was a preview of gameplay to expect from Overstrike. Then, it instead became Fuse. I had fun with the demo but it was nothing fantastic. Worse, they partnered with EA which brings theories that EA made Overstrike become Fuse. Whatever the truth is, Fuse was largely a miss.

With all that said, Insomniac has about 4 development teams across two studios. About 3 in Burbank, and one in Insomniac North Carolina. They have dropped Resistance but it seems like they will keep R&C. Also, they have steered away from consoles and PS in general for some time now, with Outernauts for Facebook (and soon for iOS) ; and it seems like they have been largely successful with that. That accounts for 2 development teams. Fuse was just finished by one (so this team will begin work on a new title) and of course Sunset Overdrive for the fourth team. That leaves one team open.

In summary,

R&C tired out but still in hands of Insomniac.
Resistance dropped b/c of declining sales/fatigue.
Tried new field and succeeded in Facebook - Outernauts

Therefore,
Tried multiplat, teamed with EA - Fuse
Exclusive work with M$ - Sunset Overdrive

It seems like a logical path for Insomniac, unfortunately.

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

Also, Sunset Overdrive kinda looked like a Resistance parody with those Grim looking baddies.

i'd advice you to not be a fan of developers and just be a fan of games instead

I feel you. and with that being said..........Sunset overdrive looks really good.

Yup, I can definitely understand where you're coming from. I've listed Insomniac as one of my favourite developers since the original Spyro trilogy.

The one thing that has annoyed me about them more than anything in the past couple of years is their lack of dedication to anything. In 2 years they developed 2 average Ratchet games; in those 2 years, they could've made just 1 and made it really, really good.

From what I'm reading about Fuse, too, it sounds like a mishmash of unfinished ideas. And like you say, the more fun ideas when we originally saw Overstrike seem to have been pulled out and put into Sunset Overdrive. Which is fine, but what if this becomes yet another half-hearted project too?

That said, I'm not upset. I won't be buying an Xbone at or near launch by any stretch of the imagination and most probably will miss out on Sunset Overdrive, but at least Xbox fans will get a chance to play what looks like a much more representative game of Insomniac's spirit. Which is great, for them - I've been playing 15+ years of Insomniac awesomeness on Sony platforms so the fact that it's being spread around now is cool.

I just hope MS treat them well. Sony + Insomniac, until the last couple of years anyway, worked really well. Insomniac put a lot of love into their titles and Sony reaped the reward of having great exclusives from them. EA + Insomniac, on the other hand, was clearly a massive clash. I hope MS + Insomniac is more like the former than the latter.

Even as a big Insomniac fan, though, it does amuse me slightly that they're developing for MS. Overstrike/Fuse was, when they announced it, such a big deal about "We're finally standing on our own 2 feet and developing our own IP's as independent developers!" Less than a month after the launch of that title, they're back in the arms of a first party published and no longer owning their IP's. Can't blame them for trying, I suppose.
