Forums - Sony Discussion - Will the 12gb PS3 ever release stateside?

I think we might see this release sometime this year whrn they do a price cut. If the rumored $99 digital only 360 comes out I could see Sony trying to get a cheap PS3 sku on the market, doubtful it would be priced that loe but at $149 I could see it selling well as a cheap Blu-Ray/gaming device, the 250gb sku would then be $199 and the 500gb-$249.

i dont think so

I wonder how much it has to do with the coincident rise in PS3 sales? I notice that PS3 has had a big bump in Europe and Australia since the 12G release. A lot of people only play FIFA or CoD, marketing a cheap system to them is smart business.

I doubt it. Primarily because it would discourage online purchases, PSN+ subscriptions, etc.

It would obviously be for people who dont care about digital content. Someone who wants it for playing bluray, streaming netflix/hulu and to play a few mainstream games like COD/sports titles. If u want digital content then get the big HDD model.

Sony has to find some way of lowering PS3 prices and staying profitable. If PS4 does launch at a sub $400 dollar price, I think PS3 has to be at least half that price to stay viable.

PS3
-Sub 720p games with frame rate issues
-Updates/patches may take up to several minutes and require full system resources
-No multitasking capabilities
-No support for tablets and smartphones
-Limited PS Vita support

PS4
-1080P games ranging from solid 30 - 60fps
-Updates and patches happen behind the scene no interruptions
-Watch TV/Movies, video chat, game, listen to music all in an instant with multitasking capabilities
-Use your tablet or smartphone to interact with device at home or on the road
-Full PS Vita support, play any PS4 game on Vita via remote play

Who would buy a PS3 in this example for $200 when a PS4 is less than double at $350? I think the 12GB is the perfect way for them to put out a unit at $150, and stay profitable while keeping PS3 viable. They should then team with a HDD maker to sell an HDD for $50 for those that want to add an HDD, but lack tech knowledge.

$350 is being pretty damn generous. Assuming you are correct about the price, though, the simple fact that the PS3's library is significantly larger than the PS4's and will be for several years is a good enough selling point for most people, I would say.

That being said, some form of price cuts would still be very beneficial.

But someone who may have interest in digital content could potentially settle with a non-HDD console because the entry fee is cheaper.

Also, limited space makes your PS3 experience pretty crappy. People with the 12GB consoles are often complaining how quickly they run out of space just from mandatory installs.

Isn't it possible to install a bigger HD in the 12gb PS3?

Well then they either buy a HDD or gwt the more expensive model, I dont get why u think its such a bad idea, the 12gb is for people who arent really buying games often but enjoy mainstream/casual titles which I dont think have mandatory installs and for multimedia features.

The 4gb 360 hasnt gotten many complaints and I think most people dont buy that standalone, mostly with thr Kinect bundle. Sony could do thr same thing and have the 12gb at $149 or bundled with Move and Wonderbook for $199 as one last push for those peripherals.
