Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Web Frame Work and Indie Outreach

In the May/June Issue of Nintendo Force, they are talking further about how Nintendo is reaching out to Indies and also have interviews with some devs who were at GDC. Just going to do some interesting highlights on what was talked about. It's always an interesting read :)

-The process for devs interested in aquiring a license is as easy as going to a Wii U Dev web page to fill a small questionnaire to get the process started.

-Nintendo Web Framework, developed by NST, can help port codes from JAVA and HTML5 to run on the Wii U, first of such APP is Wii Street U.

-Nintendo Web Framework SDK is free and is part of the Dev Kit(free or not free depending on how many got lucky with the free kit hand outs lol)  required to use it.

-Iwata spoke of Web Framework at recent financial briefing Q&A  and felt important to reach out to web devs, as the people who are versatile with web tech is probably 100 times larger in population than dedicated game machine devs.

-Popular 2D HTML5 engine Construct 2's company Scirra is currently trying to get in touch with Nintendo about possibly adding their enging to the Wii U Dev Kit.

-Super Ubie(Ubi, Ubisoft didn't like that so....) Land by Notion Games was created using Construct 2 but was ported to Wii U before Nintendo Web Framework became available and had to team up with another company(Maestro Interactive) to convert the code to C++.

-Extremely easy to port PC Unity games to Wii U.

-Sony and Nintendo booths were both right next to Unity's booth! ( lol )

-SnowCastle Games, makers of the upcoming title Festival of Magic, met up with Nintendo during GDC and praised how easy it was to work with Unity3D on the Wii U just like on PC.

-Psychoz Interactive, makes of Forgotten Memories: Sixth Sense for mobile devices, are also very interested in bringing their game to the Wii U and is now an official Wii U dev just like SnowCastle Games.

-George Paz from Psychoz Interactive mentions a few interesting things, such as "The Wii U GPU is more scalable and modern than the Xbox 360/PS3 one, and that's just the beginning,"  he also doesn't think MS is very indie friendly right now and mentioned "Microsoft is going the other way and they'll crash into a wall. Anyway, I'm not interested in Microsoft."

-Sony and Nintendo fighting for indie devs at GDC, it's on! ^_^b

-Nintendo stresses platform exclusivity  childish at event. (I guess 1st party games don't count lol...)

Great write up !
I´m glad that both, Nintendo and Sony are so open for indie developers, and the deep integration of Unity is fantastic as well (I´m still hoping for a Wasteland 2 port, these classic overhead RPGs would work amazing with the Tablet)
Microsoft...yeah...

Edit: Am I the only one who thinks that Unity will gain more and more popularity among devs ? Maybe it will surpass Unreal 4 :D !

Good write up and thanks for sharing the article. I think the last point needs to be rephrased though. Nintendo isn't saying that platform exclusives are a bad thing. What they're saying is that going to a company and saying "If you put this on another console, you can't be on mine," is childish.

Nintendo is realizing established third parties is close to a lost cause. Not only does this demonstrates their willingness not just to help small devs establish themselves but build a more personal relationship with them as well; hopefully during this process Nintendo may find the next Rare, or even the next Retro.

...or Nintendo is just desperate.

Thanks for the share! Although most of this was already known, it is nice to know how things are evolving.

Hopefully we will get some releases going and some of these titles will start to pop up.

I think Next Level Games might be a contender to be the next Rare/Retro/Monolith !

I think in a way, they are preventing a possible video game market crash on the console space by embracing the indie side of things, and I think Sony sees it too while MS is heading in a completely different direction altogether.

It's not that the video game market is crashing but actually has now evolved to where the definition of console is blurred; it's no longer fixed to a dedicated gaming device. We now live in an extremely media-centric era where entertainment is practically everywhere. That said, I agree that Nintendo is trying to save the specific dedicated gaming console space while attacting gamers with short attention span also LOL

I need this magazine in my life.
