Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Don Mattrick: "If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards"

Backward compatible is important the first few years of a console life cycle because you have less games to play on your new hardware but after that I don't think a lot of people use it.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

cant be arsed with the rest...

3. ones bluetooth, one isnt.

they are VERY different.

My tech knowledge isn't all that, but wouldn't it be possible to create a small adaptor that plugs into a USB port, picks up a different signal and converts it for the console?

Although point 3 speaks to an even more dedicated fan than point 4 did. "Can't use the controller I want" is a less significant concern than "can't play certain exclusive games".

The 360 controller can be used with PC games. My brother is using it right now to play PES 2013.

Both (PS3 and 360) controllers have been tested to have 2-5 ms of lag at worst by Street Fighter professional players in the Shoryuken forums. If he cared about that then he would be using the wired 360 controller or a third party USB controller.

Well for me, this means that I won't be able to sale my Xbox 360 console to put the money toward a Xbox One. I was really looking forward to playing my old games on the new console. I guess I would be the 5% he was talking about. So, for the first year or two I won't even consider buying a PS4 and Xbox One. I was really disappointed that the One won't play 360 games. I guess I'll get over it eventually.

no bc kinda sucks but it is also understandable. better to build your hardware for the future than the past.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I got the impression that XBLA games that were released on the 360 won't work on the X1 either (I've read the hardware has a different architecture, so this makes sense). Doesn't this defeat the whole point of "360 owners will upgrade, because they've invested so much time and money into their Xbox Live account"?

The e-peen score will transfer over though, so there's that.

this is about XBLA, didnt virtual console games have to be re-purchased?

All your DSi games work just fine.  It's like... a 5 minute transfer.

You didnt answer my question.

Yes he did. Or at least he took a gibberish question and tried to apply some sense to it. What he didn't bank on was the full extent of your ignorance. Don't worry though, I'm sure he's caught on by now.

Disappoint 12% of your userbase with no BC, another 12% with online requirements, another 12% with used game restrictions and sooner or later you're talking about real customers.

Just have a look at installed bases on the main page of this site and knock one of them down by 30%. 20 million units, no big deal, right?

no big deal if your plan is to increase the userbase by 300% with pay tv/cable subsribers .

you don't pay 400mio for some nfl shit that has nothing to do with gaming if you don't have such plans.

Why in the world would anyone buy this if they don't care about games first and foremost?  You still have to have your cable provider and cable box.  The XBone doesn't get rid of that.

Can someone explain to me why Sony gets a free pass on this and not Microsoft?

Really...?  And where have you been?  Of course Sony didn't get a free pass when backwards compatibility was taken out of the PS3 starting with the 40 gb model.  People complained.  Probably about 12 percent.  ;)  But seriously, I know people who bought an Xbox 360 instead of a PS3 because the "newer" models didn't offer backwards compatibility with PS2 games.  And I'm sure there are those who gave Sony a free pass and not Microsoft.  Why?  Pretty obvious.  It's like you constantly posting negative Sony news and positive Microsoft news and then not posting positive Sony news and negative Microsoft news.  And there has be a lot of positive Sony (PS4) news and negative Microsoft (XboxOne) news as of late.  Free pass... yep.
