Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Don Mattrick: "If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards"

I'm a Xbox360 owner and absolutely unsure about which nextgen system I will be buying, but if Sony gets their backwards compatiblity running it would be a huge plus point for me, since I don't own a PS3.

Can someone explain to me why Sony gets a free pass on this and not Microsoft?

I wouldn't say Sony have a free pass, but Sony have stated that they want Gaikai to stream all legacy games in the future, whereas MS (I think) have said they have no plans to.

I really like backwards compatibility, but I've come to accept that moving into a new HD generation it's going to be difficult to impossible. I've already learned to live with both a PS2 and PS3 on my floor so I have no reason to give the next Xbox shit over this.

But his choice of words is absolutely horrendous. In fact, everything following the presentation itself just seems like an absolute PR nightmare. I hope they manage to pull things together a bit better for E3.

and we still don't know how good this will be and what you have to pay for it.

Good points, I think it will be similar prices to Netflix. How well it will perform? We will see.

Wow, that is some stupid stuff being said. 5% figure is total bull. I play a lot of retro games and indy games because they resemble retro games. i also play a lot of gamecube on my wii. I still have a huge library of ps2 games also, i was playing san andreas the other day.

I've played at most 5 PS1/PS2 games on my PS3. One of those was downloaded off of the PS Store. I think I only played the MGS series and then SOCOM II.

because Sony choose a wording that wouldn't be outright insulting to anyone who cared about it

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

"get a second job"

He has been misconstrued anyway.

He is talking about the company, he is talking about Microsoft.  He isnt talking about consumers.

this must be such a hard time for you right now

Correct me if I am wrong, but I got the impression that XBLA games that were released on the 360 won't work on the X1 either (I've read the hardware has a different architecture, so this makes sense). Doesn't this defeat the whole point of "360 owners will upgrade, because they've invested so much time and money into their Xbox Live account"?

A new console generation works like a reset, so every company has to start from 0 again. This is the by far the best time for gamers to jump ship and it seems like Microsoft doesn't even mind if that happens. If the 360 needs to be kept anyway to have access to the digital library of games, then it's not important which brand the new console is from.

didnt nintendo do something similar?

and jump to...?

Wii U is almost 100% backwards compatible. For some reason the first Lost Winds game is an exception.

Jump to any console they wish, because they have to start from scratch on all of them.

my achievements will be transferred into trophies?  does nintendo even have an achievement system yet?  I'm not sure.

my friends will all follow me?

I can use my favoured controller on there?

Halo, forza went multiplat?

edirt... didnt you have to re-buy games for the 3ds? or was that fixed?

The 3DS has been fully backwards compatible from day one.  As far as I know, there are no games that don't work on it.
