Forums - Sales Discussion - So now that PS3 overtaking 360 is a matter of weeks, how long until it reaches Wii?

when?

2015 78 16.53%

2016 80 16.95%

2017 56 11.86%

2018 34 7.20%

nevurr 224 47.46%

Total:472

Lol at those who think that the PS3 can't sell 22M units more.

Some peple are saying never, but you have to consider the developing markets. I come from a developed country and the PS2's penetration didn't take root until the PS3 was in full swing in developed countries (same with PS1 and PS2). There is a lag for most people in these countries, and I expect the same thing to occur with the PS3 and PS4. There are PLENTY people who are interested in the PS3, especially since Sony is still supporting it and PSN is free. PS3 could eclipse the Wii in sales, but it would take time. I'd put my money on 2016 or so.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

Personally, I think that the people saying never are actually Nintendo fanboys who want to cling to the hope that Nintendo will finally win a generation.

My guess (which is all any of us can do) is that it won't. The PS3 won't have the legs the PS2 did, as it wasn't able to achieve that dominant position in the market. This means that the 360 will remain a somewhat viable alternative for consumers looking to adopt late for a "budget" console.

I have no doubt the PS3 will remain on the market for a while, but the sales will dwindle down too much for it to pass the Wii, IMO.

It doesn't need PS2s legs to surpass Wii. Very, very far from it. It will only need about 20-22m sales once PS4 is out, and PS2 did over 50m after PS3 launched (from a higher baseline).

It doesn't need PS2 legs, but I believe it'll need more than it'll be able to achieve.

The PS3 has three main things going for it in the coming years: Selling in more territories (developing markets) than the competition, blu-ray playback as a selling point, and the fact that the Wii's sales are largely irrelevant, save for slight holiday bumps.

We'll just have to see if that's enough to best Nintendo's console.

You mean a generation where Sony is a competitor and you mean home console generation.  Also "win" is a relative term.  I'm a Sony fan but I also love Nintendo and their first parties (normally buy Nintendo later in the gen).  If we're talking profit Nintendo already won.  If you mean total sales then I agree with the specifics I mentioned.

Yes, a generation where Sony is a competitor. Of course, we're not talking profit. Otherwise, people would say that Nintendo with the GC against the PS2.

But yeah, if we think about it logically, the PS3 will sell for several more years now.

Not a chance. And even if they outsold the Wii, I don't think that would mean anything considering how much money they have lost.

2019.. i think :P

Oh, I think a fair few meltdowns will be observed across gaming forums worldwide.
