Imo the reason this occurs is copycatting and media coverage.

These people that have mental problems or whatever see other people doing similar things and getting so much attention. If they didn't think they would get the attention or infamy I believe these crimes would go down. The problem is there's no way to stop the internet from being an echo chamber.
