Forums - Gaming Discussion - What are your thoughts on Square Enix?

Erm... lets see. Square amazed me during the PSOne era. FF7-9, Xenogears, Chrono cross, between many others. They were amazing and i became a fan.

During the PS2 era this started to die out. FFX was ok but very linear. FFX-2 had a great combat system but was pants story wise and FFXII was an offline FFXI with little story and heavy doses of grind. They stopped doing anything except final fantasy and dragon quest. Most franchises died out.

During this gen, they became even worse. FFXIII has a terrible battle system, linear, dislexic and with terrible characters. Dragon quest became even more niche in the west and anything they throw our way is essentially bad. But, they aquired eidos. The Eidos franchises managed to achieve sucess and basically hid what is eesntially the complete blockage of the japanese development in the company. FFXIV was a disaster and had to be immediatly remade. The new version is not bad but it wont turn any heads, especially on the sub based format that is dieing.

So yeah... its been a downfall. I can only hope that they can get their act back together and can go back to making good JRPG's. I would love a new Chrono, Xenogears (squares version of it), etc. They need to release games. They made close to nothing in the last years.

I was deeply disappointed in them this gen and now next gen has already started so I guess for a whole generation I disliked them. However in my mind they still have a chance of bringing out truly awesome games. Whenever a SE announcement is forthcoming I will still be watching because of that chance that they might release a game that would become my favorite. Not many other video game companies hold that spot in my mind.

they made a lot of great games. They've made/published a collection of games with a variety most publishers can't touch imo. They've definitely made errors, and have screwed up financially atleast in the past year. But game wise I still love them, and they're one of my favorites this gen.

Amazing
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Great

Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider Underworld
Hitman: Absolution
TWEWY

Final Fantasy XIII-2
Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light
Sleeping Dogs
FFVII: Crisis Core
Most of their old DQ/FF remakes and ports are pretty great.

Good
Kingdom Hearts BBS
Dissidia
FFXIII
DQ9
Chaos Rings Series

Dumb or Annoying
Bravely Default (Not Releasing it yet is dumb)
Final Fantasy Type 0 (Not Releasing it on PSP, however at this point in time not releasing it on some format or porting it is dumb)
FFXIV was misplanned every step of the way.

They've made a fair amount of crap too. But I tend to ignore that as opposed to count it as a negative.

I liked squaresoft . . . on the super nintendo . . .

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

I didn't really care about them until they acquired Eidos (i'm not an rpg fan). They have released so great games. Sleeping Dogs, Hitman Absolution and Tomb Raider are just some of the most recent but also the Deus Ex series

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Ever since Final Fantasy 10s release they've started to go down hill.

This is true, they lost many, many talanted people after the failure of Spirits Within, who later went on to form new studios (Alpha Dream, Monolith Soft and Brownie Brown are all entire teams composed of former Square staff )

Don't forget Bravely Default 1 & 2

As well as them shutting down their mobile games production.

They seem to be moving back in the right direction.

They still made good games sometimes, like FinalFantasy Crystal Chronicles franchise, and Final Fantasy 12 part 1 & 2 (part 2 is on DS) and Final Fantasy the 4 heroes of lightand Kingdom Hearts 3D which is around as good as 2 in storyline & way more better then Birth by Sleep in gameplay mechanics.

Lately they have been back on track to greatness once again, and I hope they keep it up.

They seem to make a lot of their best RPGs for Nintendo. Inspiration I guess.

Look forward to Bravely Default first installment coming to the WEST SIDE.

They dislike money.

Not as good as they had the potential to be, but far better than the hivemind gives them credit for.

They've had mis-steps this generation (XIII) which they swiftly corrected (XIII-2). They're still perfectly capable of making good, smaller titles (Crystal Bearers & Dissidia 012).

I have problems with their efforts in localising things, but otherwise, I quite like them.
