Forums - Sales Discussion - THE PS2 remains the king!

After getting the latest figures from Sony and having in mind that Nintendo has stopped manufacturing the DS it seems apparent that the PS2 has maintained and secured its lead on the pantheon of all time sales among the gaming consoles including home and handheld ones.

Congrats to both companies for having such phenominally successful consoles and while the software shipments weren't that close the hardware sales battle went down to the wire. Ofcourse I recognise that the PS2 and DS are from seperate generations and were not direct competitors but nevertheless it was very entertaining to observe the battle for all time HW shipments.

Now that the dawn of the 8th gen is upon us we can only hope that any of the companies can have similar results especially considering the competition from things like tablets/smartphones.

Of course. Who ever thought that the PS2 could be dethroned?

Not sure how long u have been on the site but there were a multitude of threads that predicted it. Most people that disagreed were ridiculed mercilessly.

I think most only accepted it once the DS was confirmed to be out of production.

The DS never reached 155.1M the PS2 did through march 2012, right now PS2 is likely around 157-158M

Not sure why a home console and a handheld were even being compared in the first place.

what else can anyone compare the ps2 to?

At the time it was argued that they were both consoles by definition. And wether they were home consoles or handhelds was irrelevant.

In any case whatever the point of view is for people in regards to that argument it no longer applies as the DS was unable to surpass the PS2.

It should be noted, if it really mattered to Nintendo it would have happened. Just a little more support could have pushed it over.

Support wasn't the problem, the sales of DS were. The DS just died.

Never the less, the reasons why don't actually matter, just the milestone itself.
