Is Nintendo even able or willing to surprise anymore?

They are not able to 105 25.30%

They are not willing to 65 15.66%

You suck, they still are 244 58.80%

Total:414

Yes and no. The biggest problem is this, majority of Nintendo fans.

Lets break it down:

THE UGLY:

Last year's E3 user comment feed

Please announce ZELDA

Please announce MARIO 3D

Please announce MARIO KART

FUCK WHEN YOU WILL SHOW US ZELDA OR MARIO X 1000

DAMMIT NO ZELDA NO MARIO x10000000

THE BAD:

FANS: Wii U launch, no zelda no mario? fuck you nintendo AAAGGRRRR

NINTENDO: lets do a direct tell them what they want to hear.

Anyway you get the picture.

For every 100000 people shouting for the same stuff my lonesome self says were is new adult IPs?

Like seriously STOP FUCKING ASKING for announcements on games WE ALL KNOW WILL COME.

.

THE GOOD:

Users using miiverse demanding games come to NA and EU. At least we know Nintendo pays attention, so ask for new ADULT IPs.

To clarify, I'm not talking about console innovations, about mature or gritty content or about unexpected things just for the element of surprise. I'm talking about the difference between Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Bros. About the difference between Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past "remake".

Nintendo, for me, was about striving for the next level, striving to making the gaming community shake on its feet. New directions that changed gaming forever. 3D games were changed forever after Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. But lately, there have been announced more remakes than awe-inspiring, clever new games.

Nintendo is still about quality. This Link to the Past remake? Polished, fun, quality game. No doubt. But does it wow anyone? Frankly it bores me if nothing else. And there are countless of Nintendo IPs that seem to be stuck in time (2D Mario and Animal Crossing also come to mind).

My question is, is Nintendo deliberately taking this direction, or is the creative juice not flowing as rich as it once used to?

Zelda Skyward sword was surprising and groundbreaking
Kid Icarus Uprising is easily the best 'new' IP has been released as of late, gameplay wise theres nothing alike...
SuperMario3DLand is the first original 3D Mario ever released on a handheld
Luigis mansion 2 is a sequel to a 12 year old game...etc.

seriously, if you accuse Nintendo for not being original, what do you say about the others?

Thats not the point. This exactly why Starfox Adventures turned the way it did, Nintendo takes a game likes the gameplay and reskins it with their first party. That is their train of thought when they make new games. Its a deceptive fact concerning true creativity but really a new, fresh IP for Nintendo is really what would send messages and waves throughout the gaming world as to whether they even care about having a varied strong gaming community.

so Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem didn't surprise anyone...? some memories here are short....

Nintendo seems to be out of ideas, reflected in both their games and the consoles themselves. They look to be more bothered about hitting a market rather than taking a gamble and seeing what happens e.g. SotC.

Another Mario game. Surprise!  *is surprised.*  /s

As long as they sell am I right?

Not to surprised by EAD nowadays, but their other internal studios do a lot.
