Sony didn't want to waste their development efforts and money, so they used the optical drive they had designed and instead built their own game console. |
Yes the Playstation was born out of a failed deal , the deal was Nintendo was to sell the drive as an add on while Sony sold a complete version , Later on Nintendo realising they would get nothing from the Sony side of the hardware sales since it was Sony Tech and went behind Sony's back to Phillips and got them to design one for them while still letting Sony think all was well, So Sony turned up at E3 expecting to announce the add on only to find Nintendo there with Phillips .
Ken kutaragi who was keen for Sony to make the machine themselves had met a lot of resistance but later when the board met things where still going against him till he reminded the president of what occured and from the Japanese view point they had lost a lot of face and the President considered it a betrayal so he gave the the go ahead , but because of politics with many saying Sony's not a toy company , the newly formed scei was put out of the way under Sony Music also them having success with Sony imagesoft was seen as a factor and the rest is history.
