Forums - Gaming Discussion - Microsoft Exec: “Majority Of UK Consumers Won’t Know” About PS4 Reveal Next Week

Attention all UK Xbox customers. I wanted to address every single one of you to ignore the PS4 announcement on the 20th, in fact, there isn't even an announcement. The PS4 doesn't exist. Did I say PS4? I meant to say, just stay inside and watch Netflix all day on the 20th. Cross the 20th off on your calendar. It's a day to sleep through, just don't wake up that day and everything will be okay.

Sincerely,

Microsoft

P.S. There aren't any other consoles beside the Xbox, don't even check, not even on Bing.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

He has a point. Majority of consumers in the UK - and everywhere - aren't obsessed with gaming news and are likely to not know about this announcement. The general public won't follow unless Sony makes sure what they announce is worth following for them, which is possible, but unlikely.

That's where you're wrong. People know when there's a new iPhone right? When its announced we hear about it on all the major tech/mobile sites and even on the news. Now, I'm not saying PS4 will get the same amount of coverage, but it will get coverage.

Completely agree. It will get coverage, but limited. As such, if we peg the number of UK video game consumers at 25 million, I'm confident that the PS4 will not get enough coverage to get the majority, or more than 12.5m, of consumers to take note.

@platformmaster918, do you really expect the average soccer mom or only-plays-CoD teenager to check out videos of video game news? They usually don't know about new consoles until they see advertisements.

they will if I tell them!

Grand Maester send out the ravens!  From Casterly Rock to Dorn they shall hear!  From Winterfell to King's Landing!  Across the Narrow Sea to Bravos and Qarth, and even beyond the Wall they shall hear that Playstation has returned to the world anew and stronger than ever!

I wouldn't say it's arrogance. The reality of the consumer world is that most people don't pay attention to press releases and announcements. They pay attention to what's at the big box store when they walk into it. Those are the people they are talking about and they are majority. We fans are the minority who pay attention to the details and bits of news.

After the PS4 reveal next week the majority of UK consumers won't even remember what an Xbox is.

PS3 is still last place...

Hasn't the PS3 been outselling the 360 for the last 4 years? Besides this thread is about the PS4!!

That would make no sense, because PS3 still didn't passed the 360 in total sales.

For how much longer?

Every next-gen console will have released by then and that will no longer be relevant. 360 stood above PS3 sales wise for the entire gen.

didn't know there was a time frame to sell consoles

The more Microsoft says these things, the more I'm convinced that they're scared. And you know what? As a long time Xbox fan, I'm getting pretty damn scared as well. It sounds like Sony could be making a huge comeback next generation, one that I might want to contribute to. But the more rumours I hear about the neXtBox, the less excited I am for it. Here's what I've heard so far about the neXtBox:

1) It won't play used games. In other words, I'm going to need to buy two copies of my favourite games just in case my neXtBox breaks down and I need a replacement console.

2) Kinect is literally going to be shoved down my throat (ie. mandatory). Doesn't Microsoft realize that the only reason why Kinect is so successful is because most retailers don't sell the 360 without it? I bet that most of those bundled Kinect sensors end up on a shelf or in the garbage.

Congratulations, Microsoft. You're pissing me off so much that I'm actually defending Sony.

Free advertisement for Sony? THANK YOU MICROSOFT!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

i think the majority of gamers know about this event by now,the hype is insane... i think alot of ppl have been down on microsoft after the very disappointing (leaked) released 720 specs. even if ms released a 720 event on feb 19th,it wouldnt get much hype because of the very bad and weak leaked specs. and its a matter of WHEN not if the ps3 passes 360 for lifetime sales. the last 3+ years the xbox brand has lost so much steam/popularity and its all in the extremely poor sales the last 3 years as total proof of this. even with a year advantage and massive price difference, its still heading towards a last place finish. ppl talk about how many more 360's sold compared to the original xbox, well, how could you not improve over the horrible numbers of the original (a lil over 20 mil?), you could only go up from there. and they only sold as well as they did at the beginning of this generation because of there being no sony for that first year and the ps3 insane price point,.. they kind of got sales by default. they should send sony a big gift basket .. right now,the wiiu is basically out of this generation already, nobody wants this thing, nobody talks about it,it has last place written all over this.. this might be sonys easiest generation when its all over... sony has won me over after i seen the bad 720's specs.

lol.. people are going too much into a ripoff article. He's just doing PR sales speak. People should know that the original article is about the X360 catching up the Wii and turning into the market leader in UK.

Original article:

Full Interview:

There will be a lot of attention on PlayStation next week. Is there anything Microsoft needs to do to ensure it has share of voice?

Eagle: All we know that there is an event planned on February 20th. So we can only wait and see what is announced. We are very happy with our offering at the moment. Our software market share in value was 55 per cent. So we are pretty happy.

Grimes: The reason why I love this industry is because there’s always new things happening. But we are also fantastic at creating stories that may or may not happen. The key thing for my team is to focus on who is buying today. Whatever gets announced on February 20th, the majority of consumers in the UK won’t know. They’ll still want to buy the devices out there. So in terms of noise our job will be to ensure that the consumers that are going into stores, going online, still see and experience Xbox, rather than get lost in the industry chatter. Whatever is announced is important from an industry perspective, but we must remember who is buying right now.

even if MS has the same stuff as Sony at the same price all you need to do is look at this gen to see that's still bad for them.  They were spotted a year and $200 for this gen and still couldn't secure 2nd.  Sony had the worst marketing and no system sellers until 08 (good games but all new or not big enough).  They handed Xbox the spotlight until 09 really and MS brought their biggest franchises (Forza, HALO, and Gears).  MS became the COD console almost solely because of an early lead and by virtue of friend's lists they sold more because of it.

They won't have any of that this gen except maybe they'll undercut Sony in price, but it will probably be by $100 at the most this time and if I were Sony I would market the crap out of free online and bring that up if anyone questions the price being higher or even equal.

They don't even announce any forever price cut since 2009

From Xbox to 360,the sales just increased over 50 million

Many PS exclusive become multiplatform in this gen

360 is profitable now

Then this gen still bad for them?oh right because some lame media take a little part of whole article&interview(the interview is about 360's UK market) then make it like the interview is all about PS meeting
